I would seriously consider a Marigaux..perhaps the 901. I've recently purchased the 2001, and it is the best oboe I have ever had. The sound projection is incredible, along with superb intonation - never mind the beautiful dark sound!

Here's my reccomendations:

Marigaux: sweet tone, may be too bright for some. velvety playing.

Fox: good american sound, easy keywork.

Loree: Expensive and sometimes worth it. smooth tone and seamless playing

Selmer: DIE SELMER!! EEW. EEW. D@%!

Yamaha: Good intermediate instruments, but wood is pricey, not included on most models.
