I've played the flute since fifth grade, and I'm now in 11th. I started playing the oboe in 9th grade, and took private lessons on it for about a year. My lesson teacher told me I had a really great tone for a beginner (he said it was bright..)I then switched back to flute only lessons because I got frustrated with the breathing for oboe. A couple months ago I decided I want to go farther with my oboe playing...

I have a REALLY REALLY bad plastic oboe right now and I'm getting a new one.

I want to get a really nice one, because I know I'll stick with it, but I don't know if I should. Is it too late for me to really accomplish anything great with the oboe?

Also, I don't know what kind I should get, my band teacher who was taught by Mr. Fox says I should get a fox oboe, obviously, and I'm assuming he knows what he's talking about...but my lesson teacher wants me to get the selmer resonite 104. I don't really know what to do.

Also, sorry I'm writing so much! I would prefer a much darker sound than I have now...not that I have a good sound, my oboe is crap...but which oboes would give me a darker sound?

bahhh, thanks.

It's definitely not too late.

Go for the Fox.

I'm in eleventh grade, have NO history of playing wind instruments (I've been playing guitar for about seven years) and started oboe 5 weeks ago. Dude, it's never too late.

The sound you get will depend very little on what oboe you get. Beginners will sound like crap no matter what, and proffesionals can get a beautiful tone out of anything. What matters more is your reed, your embouchure, your playing style, and your breathing.

It's never to late to pick up a new instrument. I'd go with a Fox 330. It's a nice intermediate oboe that isn't too expensive.

Definitely not too late. I've played flute for 11 years. My band needed an oboe player for the national competition that took place last weekend, so about six months ago, I began playing oboe. I now play at a fifth grade AMEB level and my band ended up coming third in the competitions. And I'm in second year uni. It's possible to go far with a lot of work.

I too am in 11th grade, and I've been playing guitar for a long time. I started the oboe about last April and it's been going great. I've found that once you already know an instrument very well, learning new ones is relatively easy.

Don't be discouraged from learning (or continuing) an instrument because you're older than many new learners. It's not like you're training to become a jedi or anything. If you want to do it, definitely invest in a new oboe and start playing again. It's not years spent on an instrument, it's time spent practicing.

I've played clarinet since fifth grade. I love it, and I am STILL playing. BUT I just picked up my daughter's OBOE and I am learning it too! I am 46. : ) It's never too late. As a matter of fact, the older you get, the more you SHOULD PLAY! It's a great stress reliever.
