I've recently inherited an oboe from my now deceased uncle, and was very surprised to be presented with it, mostly because I never knew he owned any instruments. My mother tells me that he was rather musical in his younger days, but apparently gave it up many years ago.

Now, trying to identify the oboe myself by looking around on the internet is highly confusing for someone like me. I'm ashamed to admit that right now, most oboes look alike to me, so I was hoping some of you people on here could help me provide some information about the type of oboe it is.

I've absolutely no musical skills whatsoever, but maybe I should gently encourage my young daughter in a musical direction, if indeed the oboe is at all playable. Well, maybe you can tell me.

Here are some pictures of it (the pictures are quite large, so you can make out details hopefully):

Any information at all will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Ole

Edit: Ah, well, Photobucket scaled the pictures down quite a lot, so let me know if you'd like closeups of any particular part of the box or the oboe.

Thanks for the link.

I had looked on it before, but from their website it might seem to be somewhat similar to the 900 series, but many of them look so identical, at least to an oboe ignorant like myself, that there would probably be no way for me to identify it personally.

I'll get a better photo of the particular place you asked for tomorrow.

Thanks again.

It's obviously an old oboe, so the current models will not be a match.

The corrosion around the keys indicates that it will minimumly need some careful TLC & likely an overhaul before it can be played.

Marigaux oboes have a good reputation, so it's worth having it checked by a repair tech to determine if it's repairable.

You could try using the serial number on the oboe (usually located near the joint) and look it up on the Marigaux website..

http://marigaux.com/index_en.html (click on "The FAQ" along the top-bar of the website).

I can't help you but I would like to tell you that when it was newer that was a very good reed case.
