See, I never understood why beginner oboes were compared to dying ducks, and not just ducks. Is it maybe because most beginner oboes are really flat?

well, when i first joined band with the oboe, people who had never even heard of an oboe said it sounded like a dying duck. i have no clue why. sometimes i thought that the middle C (on the staff) sounded sort of like a duck, but just that note. i don`t know why dying duck is specified.

The online chart mentioned looks technically correct but hard to read--for a better chart, buy an Oboe Method book at your local music store. Most will have oboe fingering charts. For the truly cheap and lazy, find a method book at your local high school or colleges` music library and photocopy that one!
They`re also available on their own from double reed specialists like www.oboeworks.com (they sell a laminated Martin Schuring full fingering chart for less than $2.00).

guys dont feel bad about your oboe
it is a lovely sounding instrament.
it is way better than a french horn.
im in 7th grade and switching to an
oboe.the french horn sounds like a
"dying moose".

Hello. Welcome to the world of oboe playing. To answer your question, Annisa, the left hand goes on the upper joint.
By the way, I`ve never heard of an oboe being referred to as a dying duck--- maybe a duck being strangled. But keep at it--- it takes a lot of time to get the tone to sound good.

It is because at first it takes a long time to get a nice smooth sound with out any squeeks and at first it is hard to control the volume and picth that you play

I am and in 8th grade and there are 4 oboes in my shcool (1 in 6th, 2 in 7th, 1 8th(me))so one of the 7th graders started to warm up and the band director told her to stop because it sound like she was killing a cat. I really don`t get it becuase she is the best out of all of us. But then again nobody listens to Mr. I becuase he sticks his baton in his nose then his ear and then his mouth. Well i g2g practice for All-State. .
