Okay, so I just started playing oboe on Friday.
Problem is I don't have a teacher, we can't find one where I am.
To make a long story short, I'm teaching myself as much as I can before summer, then hopefully going to a music camp.
First day was fine, learned G, A, B, and high C.
So far so good. Blowing wasn't too big of a pain, my lips lost control after about 20 minutes, but I had to stop then anyway.
Second day was okay, until I tried to play D... when I play low D, it ends up as high D or doesn't do anything... same for Eb.

I'm just wondering if it's the way I'm blowing, the reed, the oboe, or something else... any ideas?

I have a medium soft Rico reed (only one we can find over here... guess not too many people in the UAE play oboe... and actually my dad got it in Australia). Not sure what the oboe is, some friends had it and didn't ever use it.

So if anyone has any ideas, any tips for me, or knowledge of anyone willing to teach oboe in Dubai or Sharjah... let me know.

I know EXACTLY how you feel./ My teacher said that I had to have all of the correct keys pressed down HARD, and the biggest thing my teacher said was to THINK low. THINK like it's a very low note, and barely push any air at all. When I first did my low d, it sort of vibrated (low D, Eb, and Bb are very resonant notes). I got real excited and blew really hard, you should have heard it, it went an entire octave up and screeched the heck out of my tutors ears lol. good luck
