It may sound kinda gross but please bear with me. I've been drilling myself quite intensively in the recent. I push my tummy a lot when I drill on Staccatos. Last night, the practice made my tummy soar... and then I had an urge right after exercising and go to the washroom. Thing was done and... BEHOLD!!!!... BLOOD!!!! Blood in the toilet bowl... It's BLOODY STOOL!!!!

I don't think I have hemorrhoid... but my physician once warned me about this for I'm over 30 and it happens quite often on men esp. when they sit too much. I'll go to my physician again on Mon to find out. Meanwhile, I'm just wondering if anyone had a similiar experience. Could intensive drilling exercises cause the blood vessels to dilate and rupture capillaries inside my bowel when I go to toilet???

Are you pulling your muscles in or are you pushing your muscles out? Or do you have a third hand and you are actually pushing on your stomach?

Regardless . . . .

In theory you could squeeze incorrectly and cause internal bleeding. Usually that results in tissues bleeding and you see bruises or in very intense cases your limmb will go numb and then you need to go to the emergency room to stop the bleeding. But when muscles bleed it is in the tissues and not your digestive tract.

Check your diet. Excess of Caffiene, dairy products, and alcohol can all cause the symptoms you describe. Lack of Fibre (fruits and vegetable) will also cause the symptoms you describe. Excess proteins and/or if you have an ulcer from stress it could also result in the symptom described.

Ask your doctor for a FOBT test. It's simple and non-evasive.

Causes can be; benign or malignant growths or polyps, hemorrhoids, fissures, intestinal infections, ulcerative colitis,Crohn's disease, diverticular disease, abnormalities of the blood vessels.

But it is probably not related to practice directly.

Thank you very much for the advice.

I often push my tummy out a bit when playing a note. My oboe instructor often says I'm pushing too hard on high-notes and I should try to use less force.

... very afraid of going to the washroom now... I guess I'm so worried that I feel no bowel movement since last night...

It's probably a funny topic if I were not the chosen one... imagine someone stands right in front of the toilet bowl after playing some oboe exercises... frustrated by the urge within his tummy, scared by the !****! gory that would happen to him again... To "sit" or not to "sit", that is not a question but a problem... only Hamlet knows how I feel now...

... sigh... anyway... will go to see my physician later today. Thanks anyway!!!

Only time I ever saw this was after riding a motorcycle too long across country. Was also not pretty. I was a lot younger then.

I have been known to get an upset tummy when I practice too much, both on tuba and on oboe. Oboe it seems to have gone away as I've gotten used to it; tuba too when I get used to it after a long break.

But nothing ever like what you describe. Presumably your physician will find the cause of it.
