Sorry, one more thing. Does anyone know a good reeding making kit? I've been wanting to make reeds, but still need to buy a kit. I heard it's hard...are there instruction books?

You need to buy stuff from places like Forrest's music or RDG woodwinds.

You also need a teacher to show you how to make reeds. You cannot learn from a book. And it takes several years to be able to consistently make reeds that you can play on. Don't try this on your own. You will waste your time and money. Cane is expensive. A really good reed knife also costs a lot.

I started making my reeds about a year ago with the help of my teacher. I bought my kit from MCW Mark Chudnow ,it's got everything (except beeswax) for your first reeds. It has :MCW hollow ground knife, MCW mandrel, wooden cutting clock, flat plaque, ruler, 10 pieces of gouged and shaped cane, 6 Sierra brass staples and 1 spool of FF thread, all in a zippered tool case. It costs about $130; I love my kit and it's great! The link is <http://mcwoboe.com/>, under supplies

You'll also need a sharpening stone (and maybe oil for it, depending on what kind of stone you get). I use an india stone and oil, but I know people who like to use a diamond stone with water.

You'll need razors, too.

If you are teaching your self, do not go and invest a vast amount of money in reed making tools, like landwell reed knives. I would definitely buy one of the basic kits from Forrest or Midwest Musical Imports or the like. I will tell you that you are in for a lot of hours and stress of making reeds if you plan to teach yourself. Good luck with that.
