I have been playing oboe for about 4 years and i am going to learn the english horn (Soon I hope!!) Is there anything about it that is different than the oboe? I live in a VERY small town so I can't exactly take lessons from a private teacher. Any help would be appreciated!

with the english horn, you hopefully know its pitched in F, so it's lower thanthe oboe. the embouchure is slightly different. you have to drop your jaw, kind of like whne you are playing lower notes on the oboe. the half hole key is a little harder to work, but you will gradually get used to using it. it is also a lot heavier than the oboe, and your thumb will probably hurt after playing for awhile (i know mine was killing me). i wish you the best of luck on playign!

with the weights.. it isn't a ton heavier, but you will definetely feel a difference.

To help with the weight, you can use a neck strap. A regular saxophone neck strap should work. If the hook is too large to fit in the little loop on the thumb rest, you can use a rubber band to attach them.

That sounds like it would work!
