Ew. I don't like store reeds. Often times, they are out of tune and/or leak and splinter. If I were you, I would seriously consider finding someone that can make oboe reeds for you. The advantages of homemade reeds is that you can costomize them to your oboe, and your personal playing abilities, by making them vibrate more or less, and changing the length. You can also choose for yourself the type of cork, cane, and even string.

I have a couple of reed making tips for you. Get a knife specially made for tips and fine tuning. Beveled knives are fine for the rough draft, but once you get down to the thinner cane and smaller shaves, such as in the tip, use a straightedge.

The Black Reeds from Edmund Neilsen Woodwinds are consistant, they are labeled as student reeds, but I like them...

...Is it wrong to not rotate reeds? Honestly, I have one or two, and when one poops out, I use the other.

I wouldn't know about a good type of oboe reed. Loree is the best for everything oboe. I'm not sure if they make reeds or not, but if they do, I would check them out.

I also never order anything off of websites. I just go to the music store at Five Points. ... Is that wierd? It seems that everyone else on this website orders everything.

no its fine if you don't rotate them, my band teacher just wants us to always have 5 reeds... they also don't wear out as fast.

its not wierd to not order things, i just ordered reeds online for the first time cuz jones went out of buisness(good reeds after u adjust them), and our local stores didn't carry very nice reeds.

My daughter gets her reeds from her oboe teacher -- who also sells reeds online. Meg is very nice and will discuss the reeds with you if have a problem with them or don't know which reed to select. (Goodtoneguild.com)

We went to Loree in Paris in 2007 and we were VERY SURPRISED that the reeds for sale in their display case were Jones reeds. We figured they would have a better reed for people who might be trying their oboes, but then again, probably most oboists would bring their own reeds to test instruments.

Of course, I understand Jones went out of business, making it very difficult to find "store-bought" reeds.

Yeah, if you are choosing to buy a Loree, by that time you should be using hand hand reeds, or even making your own.

Lesher reeds are available from advantageusa.com. They have many other brands too and I think their prices are good. There is such a shortage of reeds on the market that we can no longer afford to be picky. You might find that brands which you thought were not good are actually fairly decent. Keep an open mind! Also, for those concerned about buying online, I have found that the shipping in most cases is not much different than local sales tax. It is best to buy locally but if the local store does not have what you need then online is the best option.
