Yep. A regular check up (about once or twice a year) helps a LOT. Even if you think your oboe's okay. It saves lives.

Hello everyone,

I have recently purchased a Moennig Oboe, I looked up their website but I am currently not fluid in german. I have over heard by other players that they are decent though known more in Europe then here in the States. Has anyone heard anything about their oboes, good or bad? I used to have a Signet Soloist when I went to highschool, but years later it got stolen. It was a good instrument and it never gave me grief. Can anyone give me a heads up if I made a mistake in getting the Moennig horn?

Thank you

I thought the Germans used different reeds from the French or Americans?

Thank you for the replies. I ended up returning the oboe, once I recieved it, it was not in playing condition, had 5 cracks, 3 on the bell, one in the middle joint and one on the very top by the first key on the upper joint, besides missing 7 pads. None of it was mentioned on the ad so they refunded my money. (thank goodness) Now I am looking into a Selmer Omega full conservatory oboe. It's practically new, they are offering it to me for 400.00 I think I will get that one. Has anyone every played or heard of the omega oboes?

I've never heard of omega oboes, but I would not recommend getting a selmer. One of the oboes that I tried out when I was going to get a new oboe was a professional selmer and it was one of the worst instruments I have played on. It just didn't have a good sound. I've heard that they aren't very good from other people as well.

I recommend starting on a Yamaha. The complete student model for the Yamaha is great for beginners. I think it's the YOB 241. I has Left F, low B, Low Bb holes (no keys, you gotta use your knees!), C-D trill, C# trill and a bunch more. Really good for beginners though. Nice plastic body, durable easily goes up to 2 1/2 octaves.

Wow.

A lot of what I've seen off of these posts are people talking of oboes that are under $1,000. My experience with oboes is that what you pay for is what you get, and you really can't get a decent oboe for less than a few thousand dollars.

I managed to pay only $2,300 for my Fox Renard oboe, because I had bought it from my private teacher. Sometimes you CAN get a bargain, but make sure that it is being sold cheaper for reasons other than that it is in poor playing condition.

If you don't know much the maker, or if there is no free trial/ guarentee on the oboe, I would suggest that you stay away from it. Most of the time, these oboes are not in good playing condition and the owner is trying to make it sound like you are getting a good deal when really, you are getting just the opposite.

Yeah. I had a horrible experience with renting an oboe. I thought renting a wooden oboe with low Bb would be great for $30ish a month. Turns out it was like 40 years old and pitched in C#. Fun fun fun.

Again thank you to everyone who responded, its great to come to a forum where people take time to reply. And not only does it help the person who asked the question but it also helps many others who may have similar questions.

I ended up buying the omega selmer oboe. I am not disappointed with it, in fact compared to some of the other oboes I looked at it is very descent. Sure its not wood, or a better know brand, but for what I wanted it for its perfect. I played for many years professionaly, unfortunately a few years when I was moving out someone took my beloved oboe, I didn't realize this til later when I unpacked my things in the new house. I had no proof so there was nothing I could do. I got this oboe now as a gift from my husband because he wanted me to play again. I am no longer at the level I used to be, so I guess I am starting from square one again. But if my soon to be born son desire to pursue music or any of my future children I think this insturment will be great to start on. If I ever get back into professional status then of course I will dish out the money and get a professional oboe. Funny thing is I learned to play the oboe as my first instrument with no music knowledge or any instrument background, and they started me with a full conservatory oboe, I look at the student models and wonder how in the world you would use your knees to cover the B note on the bell. Okay.. I will stop now before I write war and peace and bore everyone to death...

Happy New Years to all!
