I discovered the beautiful music of "Gabriel's Oboe" by Ennio Morricone not long ago and found myself tempted to buy and learn the oboe in hopes of someday being able to create such music myself. Well, you can only dangle a lure in front of a fish so long before it bites, and this weekend I placed my order for an oboe (Barrington 801). So while I await delivery, I figured this post would serve as my introduction and hello. Looking forward to the journey ahead.

I am playing this on the oboe, and am playing it as a solo piece at a concert in June. Its a BEAUTIFUL piece, probably my favourite piece to play on the oboe.

Good luck with the Barrington. I hear they play well and are pretty good for a beginner, but apparently have low life spans.

If you want to play Gabriel's oboe in a sort amount of time. To get good fast:

1) LONG TONES. Every day for 15 mins. Helps with breathing, tone, embouchure, fingerings, everything!
2) SCALES. Learn all your majors and minors EARLY rather than later. You'll need them. and they help out a load when sight reading.
3) SITE READING. Helps so much. Everyday at a nice slow speed. Scan the peice through first and find the hardest part. Then chose a tempo you can play that part and play the song.

Hope this helps.

I know from experience. Also practicing everything 100% instead of just 90%. Trying to perfect everything helps.
