I actually appreciate how the left f isn't on beginning oboes- I abused mine once I got used to it. Sometimes although it seems easier, for fast fingerwork one of the other two work better.

Other ways to tell are the weight of the instrument I've noticed, although that might not necessarily be true. In my experience lighter instruments are lesser quality. The feel of the keys can be an indicator too, but that may be personal preference.
