Hope I can describe this alright! I have one reed that is just being a pain in the bum and the edges of the two pieces of cane separate themselves too far- so there is a gap to about halfway down the reed. Of course it makes a terrible sound when it's like this, but after a while of playing the two edges seem to stick together and it starts to sound quite nice. Any tips on getting it to stay like that? I don't have reed making equipment and have never really been instructed on adjusting reeds- i just kinda make it up myself! I've tried adjusting the wire but that's no help. Frustrated! (Oh why oh why didn't I take up a brass instrument with no reed?!)

this happens to my reeds sometimes when they get old. Is the reed you are talking about an old reed? I think the best thing to do with that reed is if you have to use it, soak it a little more (especially if it is an older reed as those usually need more soaking than newer reeds) and warm up on it until the sides close. Otherwise, try a different reed.

When a reed starts to separate itself there are two ways to try and squeeze more life out of the reed. The best way is to take a pair of flat-nosed pliers (you can get these at a craft store for about five bucks) and squeeze the sides of the reed gently after it has been thoroughly soaked. If you don't have pliers, soak it in hot water for about five minutes and use your fingers to close it. Hope this helps.
