If you want hand made reeds, get an oboe teacher! Or find an oboe teacher that will supply you with reeds. Reeds are essential and store bought reeds are usually bad.

A basic reed making kit usually includes: reed knife
plaque
cutting block
razor blades
mandrel
thread
ruler
pencil
cane and staples

It is REALLY hard to learn to make reeds on your own though. Even if you could find a way to get a few reed lessons, it would help you learn the basics, and then you would just have to keep making reeds and experiment to find what works.

Reed making is hard. Without a teacher you can't do a whole lot. Oboegirl is right, experimentation is probably your best tool.

I know how you feel. I live pretty much in the middle of nowhere, and during the school year we have to drive 2 hours to get to the city where I take lessons and play in a youth orchestra every sunday. It gets old after a while, but is really worth it. Is there any city nearby that you could go to even once a month to get lessons?

I found this great site for reeds. She makes all of her reeds herself and you can tell her any kind of specifications that you want, so they are very custom made, which is what I was looking for, so I tried a few and they played really well. The site is customdoublereeds.com

If anyone is looking for an oboe in great condition i am selling one for a very cheap price of $1500. It has been slightly used but has been professionally repaired. For more information you can check out my add on craigslist.
