I`ve asked some oboe players, and they`ve all learned to make reeds from their teachers. One of them learned from a book, and she makes them incedibly well. I just wonderin when i should start making them, and if i should learn from a book, or a teacher. i`ve been on oboe for 4 years at least or more. I`m still intermdite level, because i`m always working, and really got no time to practice, once i get into another college i plan to improve and go on to like... a major music school. Also... whats the best way to buy an oboe. I don`t have the money to buy the oboe i wish to buy, was wonderin if most companies would let you do in payments, like a car...I got a tone of more questions, but this is for now. I have right now.. a lorrial or how ever it`s spelt, and it`s intermidate level oboe. Thanks for your responses!
Jen

I don`t know anything about reed making (haven`t been playing that long), but you may want to look around at some different music stores to see if they let you do a "rent-to-buy" plan - that`s how I`m paying for my oboe.

I got my oboe from a place called Royal Music, and I`m not sure if it`s a chain or not..... basically, you pay 50 dollars each month and it goes into a fund that pays for the instrument over time. At the rate I`m going, I`ll own it once I`m a sophmore in high school Still a long ways to go....

If you are truly serious about advancing on the oboe you definitely need to learn to make your own reeds. Most people start learning how to in their second or third year of playing. On the subject of a new oboe I would wait until you are taking private lessons and your teacher can help you decide before making a decision like that. Besides, depending on your major and the school you choose, you may end up needing a very specific oboe.

I started making my own reeds when I was in 7th grade...I personally think they are much better than ones you can buy, this being that they are personal, and you can always change them to your likings. It takes a lot of work to finally get a perfect reed...but, it is well worth the wait!

Good luck!

I bought my own used oboe for $800 from my tutor...but, until I had the $$$...I rented one from Mars music store
Good luck!

i`ve only been playing for two years but am already very good (or so i`ve been told) and the reason for this is probably due to my reeds kept in fantastic condition .
anyway, i don`t make my own reeds, i get them in from the city, but there`s a girl in yr12 who`s taking lessons from this guy to learn how to make reeds. i hope to make my own reeds one day, and i think it important to do so. maybe if i make my own reeds it`ll give me an even better reason to keep them un-chipped and unscathed!
