Not really, unless you are in a weird jazz band, which is really not a jazz band. Oboes aren`t were common in jazz bands!

Sorry, I`ve never seen a oboe playing in a jazz band too.
I suggest you may try to play a piece that impress every one.

Good Luck !

Hey,
yeah, I don`t think I`ve seen oboes in jazz much either. It`s the same as flutes and clarinets and those types though. I think it`s b/c they don`t have a loud enough or brassy sound that can be heard w/the mixture of other instruments such as saxaphones and trombones. People just don`t think of oboes as jazz instruments, so they don`t put an oboe part in the composition (if any).

Yes actually, they can. my uncle has met a jazz oboist before. Also, the famous gershwin piece rhapsody in blue (which is like a jazz/blues thing) uses oboes

Do a web search for Yusef Lateef. He plays jazz on the oboe.

It`s not for everyone, but hey, someone out there might like it...

I think oboes are unused goldmine in the Jazz.
I think the french style of oboe would go best with jazz cause its so free and good for long solos. I haven`t tried a dutch type and the american type sux nearly always cause its sound changes in distance and its hard to play.

Actually, I have read that Oboes are starting to make a hit in the jazz world. More and more people are experimenting with them and their sound in a jazz setting.

No, it`s illegal.
If you play jazz on the oboe you will be arrested.

Hey Amanda, just kidding.

The oboe is a very expressive instrument - what more could you ask for in jazz? The range is almost identical to the soprano saxophone, and if you need more volume you could always clip a microphone in the bell. I agree with Ossur that it`s a potential goldmine.

I think baroque oboe would be even better, as the sound is a little less refined and you probably have a bit more freedom to bend the pitch.

See if you can get any "music minus one" recordings of some jazz standards, or play around with some MIDI files for some backing.

I am an Oboist, and I play Jazz with it. It is not easy because some features of the instrument like volume & sharpness. BUT it is really great and brings new and fresh sound to the Jazz. I play regularly with 2 bands: One is the Common Bond - Ethinc jazz world music(www.common-bond.netfirms.com) and the other is the Tel-Aviv Art Ensemble - free jazz (www.taae.netfirms.com). Lately I also played with "Swinging Europe" a European Big-Band (www.swinging-europe.com), and the oboe just fitted great within the reeds section...

my honest oppinion is that oboe was made for orchestra and chamber music, so lets keep it to the classics. however i have never heard of jazz oboe (cant critisize something you dont understand so..) anyone know of any CD`s out there featuring a jazz oboe?

i think im addicted to this website.

Oboes can play in a jazz band but it`s usually only a small amount of oboe players who do.
