If your band director can`t help you, start looking wider. Track down the local high school oboists and ask who they take their lessons with. Contact the Flint Symphony Orchestra (Flint, MI) and the Flint Institute of Music, they`re a very good bet to find local oboe instructors. http://www.thefim.com/fso/ The nearest college to you geographically (with a music program) is Spring Arbor University, about ten miles from Durand so call them too. Their switchboard number is 800.968.9103, just ask for the number or extension for the Music Department and keep asking for who to talk to until you get someone who can answer your questions. You might also call Mott Community College’s music office at 810-762-0459 (about fifteen miles from you). Finally, call the University of Michigan—Flint at (810) 762-3377.

Ask both for contact information for those schools` own oboe professors but also for the names of students (music or music education majors) specializing in oboe. Even if those people aren`t taking students, they can certainly help you find local oboists. If no one is available for lessons, they’ll at least be able to tell you the double reed specialists closer to you that might be more willing to teach out in the Durand area.

I don`t know the area you are in, but what you can do is go to a local university with a good music program and see if any graduate students majoring on Oboe are offering to give lessons. THey usually know how to make reeds as well. THey are also taking lessons and taking classes completely dedicated to Oboe and music in general, so if a huge question comes up that they can`t anwer, they can ask their private teacher or professor about it and give you a valid answer.
