I've played in a youth orchestra as an oboist for a year and a bit now, and every time I have my picture taken whilst playing, one would see the most ridiculous face ever; the same goes for my partner.

Is it possible to look somewhat decent with lips rolled into the mouth and with eyes bulging?

I'm just curious.

Simple answer: NO.

If you want to look pretty while playing, take up the piano or the violin or the guitar, but a wind instrument does not make for a pretty picture.

This is not really very possible. What you can do is to make you look less ugly while playing the oboe. There are ways:

- Breath properly. With sufficient oxygen, you look more distant from death
- Close you eyes. A lot of the time you look ugly because of the high pressure built up in your head, which nearly blow your eye balls out of your skull. Closing your eyes will make most oboe players look nicer.
- Use an oboe reed which is suitable for you. If your reed is not good for you, it'll be really painful to play.
(I highly recommend oboe reeds by "performancereeds.com".)

But frankly, if your audience really know how to appreciate the oboe music, they seek for nice tone and the emotional expressions. For "attractiveness", they should go for pop music for those "commercial" artists.
