hey,
I was wondering what you people`s views on fibercane oboe reeds were. they seem to be wider and shorter that regular reeds. what exactly are they made of??? is there a reason why they`re always so rough?? thanks a bunch,
Corinne

Hi, my opinion is that you should stay away from them. They will not help you develop as an oboist and they don`t sound good.

How long have you been playing, and do you have a private teacher? Why not start learning how to make them?

Good luck

Well, I`ve been playing for 4 years now, and I stopped lessons at the beginning of this month. I had been taking them for I guess about 3 months. I`ve wanted to know how to make my own reeds, but all I`m doing now is adjusting store bought reeds. We`ve been thinking of having me start making my own, but it may be a while. You make your own?? I already decided that I don`t like the fibercane reeds just b/c they don`t have good tone. The only thing about them is that you don`t have to tighten or loosen your embouchure for notes high or low.

My daughter uses hers as the `spare`...she doesn`t like it either for regular use.

I just got a fibercane reed and I found that it is hard to play on and doesn`t have a particularly nice tone.

yes, they don`t have the best tone, but i don`t think that they are very hard to play. you just have to have a very open embouchure. i think that the tone is just a bit watery sounding. i think they main problem would be b/c of the rough surface...how would you fix that????
