OMG its not that bad sounding is it i`ve ben playing for 2 1/2 yrs i dont soung as squeky any more , well listen to the profeshonal* people play the sound great but people still dont like, my band director treats me like crap cuz she doesnt like oboes, i feel so left out, and i lot 1st chair to an oboe player who has been playing for 5 mounths i feel so....i dont kno, people plz answer me

The sound of an oboe is an acquired taste I suppose, not everyone likes it. My friend, he`s a clarinet player and he wants to kill me in my sleep because of it, but it`s maybe just my sound. It takes a while to get really good, and maybe your band director had a reason to put the other player on 1st (sometimes it helps them get better faster, or they just happen to have a knack for it)

My first few years I was horribly made fun of and quite a few times I came out of the band room almost in tears. Maybe she put the other oboe in 1st chair because she`s pushing you to be your best and make those duck noises leave. Who knows, maybe she doesn`t like oboes because they take so long to learn and the noises in the process...*cringes* Think of it as a goal to become first chair and show them all (especially trumpets..) that oboes DO sound awsome and bring some life to the music!

ok i am gonna get first chair back i will, i will i lost it cuz i played E flat whet the key signiture was in F i kno what all of u guys are saying but i did get some held with my sound i waz at solo and ensamble fesstabe i got a red ribon an a prefesional oboe helped me i sound a little better, soooo what i get back to school monday i am going to challenge 1st chair and i WILL win 1st chair back

I don`t hate the oboe. I mean, it isn`t my favorite instrument...but then again I play the clarinet...so the clarinet is my favorite of course. I think the only reason i don`t like the oboe is because the ones that play at our school don`t try hard enough. This drives me crazy because i practice probably 1 or 2 hours per day...otherwise, I love the oboe and love listening to oboe solos all of the time. it has a unique sound, and when played well, it has a beautiful sound. Keep it up! Oboes are wonderful instruments--it takes all instruments to make a up any sort of band! Best Wishes!

Alot of people hat e the oboe because its not popular, and because its not really a solid, consistent sound i think... like, a clarinet always sounds like a clarinet, but theres a good sound and a bad sound still... oboes can sound like dying ducks, or really good. I`m kind-of an oddity i guess... i got my really awesome, kick-butt sound after 6months, and play with colleges and stuff. If anyone has any oboe problems, nothing is better than just asking a oboist. Good Luck getting first chair back!

Everyone in my band class hate the oboe except my friends who also play the oboe. My Band teacher and my classmates make fun of the double reed sound and our instruments( oboe, basson) It`s just that when your a beginner you sound like a dying duck and it is not very popular like the flute or the trumpet

Why do so many people hate the Oboe? They are too stupid to figure out that the Oboe is part of the Band or Orchestra, it takes all instruments to make the group complete and be in equilibrium.

hmm that`s weird.. the reason i wanna take up oboe is because i feel it make the best and most focused sound (when u get it rite). unfortunately, my school does not have 2x reed instruments. humph

All the flute players hate the oboes in my eighth grade band. They`re jealous cuz we can play most of their stuff but they can`t play ours as cool sounding. Haha

I just started on the oboe a few weeks ago. My teacher says i have a decent tone but everyone hates the sound except for the people that like it cuz it sounds funny. so they laugh to. i think what makes people dislike it so much is that it is soooo loud(for me anyway). But I like the sound and don`t care what other people think

I`m Thinking About Trying The Oboe. . . I Already Play The Flute And I`m At First Chair In My 7th Grade Class. And After Reading All Of These Things About People Laughing At You I`m Not Sure That I Want To Play It Anymore. . . Should I? I Like The Sound It Makes And The Fact That It Is Different From All The Other Instruments Because Of The Double Reed. . .
