If you`re willing to practice, and you really think you want to work at it, then sure, go for it!! The fingerings are similar to a flute, so you should have no problems with that.

People WILL say you sound like a dying duck for the first few months, but really, it`s nothing. YOU know you are working hard, and YOU know you will sound good soon. Don`t let other people get you down.

If everybody let other people influence them like that, who would be playing the oboe?

Hi y`all

Before i begin, i play the oboe

People make fun of the oboe because it is easy. Think about it. When we start, we suck. We are really loud, and we sound like ducks. No one else plays the oboe, so you are alone. Try to make fun of a clarinet, and you have 10000 people striking back.

Plus, as others have mentioned, no one understands us. By the time we get good, everyone is used to making fun of us, so they keep doing it.
I was lucky, when i went to high school, me and my stand partner were the first oboes the band had had for a while, so the upperclassmen liked us

Do any of you guys take lessons? I do, and they really help alot. Like playing soft. Don`t blow less, but blow harder and sqeeze/bring in corners more! And remember to keep your corners in say "ooh"! (a. sorry for those who do take lessons. b. sorry for non-oboeists c. sorry i sound like my oboe teacher

P.S. Jane (my oboe teacher): Does your band play flat or sharp?
me: Ummm... when we tune I am usually flat
Jane: So your band plays sharp. now...

P.P.S any of you make ur own reeds?

P.P.P.S I HATE BEING FLAT!!!!!

P.P.P.P.S Uh... I forget

I`m in the 6th grade band at my school and i am one of the five oboes. My band teacher was so happy when she go to work with so many oboes because it is not her main instrument and she wanted to learn more about it. She was also happy because we were the only oboist ever to start on the oboe at our school. If you like band vist our high schools webpage. www.marching-eagles.com It`s a great site.

I know how you feel Mandy. Me and the other oboe player are always critisized about sounding weird. I personally thinks the oboe sounds awesome(way better than the flute anyways). I guess some people just wony get used to the sound. Or maybe they sound so bad themselves and have to pick on other people to make themselves feel better.

i reaaallllly want to play the oboe. nobody else does at my school does so everyone would be worse than me

i already play the flute & piccolo & piano and want to do music when i leave school. its costing me a fortune

where can u buy an oboe very cheaply and what makes r good. is boosey & hawkes any good or yamaha or whatever. what price can i expect to pay?

i used to detest the oboe but when i tried it i liked it, so anyone who slags u off just get them to try it- if they think its fun they will shut up!!!

Poor kids. I know excactly how you feel. I played in the pep band for football/basketball games, and I got harassed for it really badly back in freshman year. It`s one thing if a girl plays the oboe, but when you`re a guy you get ripped apart. But, I found this not only to be my inspiration to get better, but also to start pumping iron. Now I bench 160% of my body weight (205 lbs, do the math) and run a 5:15 mile. Anyone who makes fun of the oboe now gets the 1000 mile stare of death. Then if that isn`t enough to deter them, I unscrew their heads. :D

Remember, children, violence solves everything.

I have never heard of a boy playing the oboe being a problem before. In my experience, if you are a good player no one cares what you look like, they just love the opportunity to hear you play. I`ve never thought of the oboe as a "girly" instrument, especially for the fact that most of the professional oboists in the top orchestra are MALE! That is really sad that people made fun of you for that Alex, but it is also the first I ever heard of that! Do you live in an extremely conservative area? At least some positive came out of the ridicule! P!! Most people don`t even know what the oboe is in my area! That will change next year though because i`m going to Oberlin Conservatory of music, so i`ll have to see what the attitude is there!!!
