I`ve played oboe for 4 years now, and love it. It`s a difficult instrument, so it takes alot of practice, but it will always keep you on your toes. I sounded like crap for a l-o-n-g time, untill I found different reed company. The oboe (when properly in tune, other wise OUCH!!!!) adds a sound into a piece of music that no other insturment can. I also play clarinet, but don`t like it nearly as much. Maybe it`s just me though...

Oboes sound like little ducklings to me sometimes but I love the way they blend into the rest of the band.

I`ve been playing the oboe for 6 months and my band director as well as everyone else in the band (except the other person who plays it) makes fun of it and calls it a duck. I can`t stand it. Of course not everyone hates it but it sure feels like it sometimes

Well, that just kinda happens in every band.... everyone pays attention to the one unusual instrument because, well, EVERYONE`S a clarinet or a flute or whatever.

My friends refer to my oboe as "the duck", but I don`t mind - that`s just playful joking and all of that. I don`t squeak much, so no one ever bugs me about that..... the clarinets take care of the squeaking blame. Silly clarinets.....

I think that the so many people hate it, because young and starting oboe players often sound like crap , and they give it a bad name. Im the 1st chair 8th grade oboe player at my school, and i used to sound funny too last year, until i learned vibrato. Vibrato is a very simple thing, and it will make you sound a whole lot better. if you dont know what it is, ask your band director.

Most people hate the oboe because they are either a) ignorant of what an oboe is really supposed to sound like and are basing their appraisal of the oboe`s worth on the substandard playing of people in their crappy school bands, or b) have no taste.

Huh? Where I live I was never made fun of it, since I`m the only oboist they praise me and tell me too keep working harder. But that is probably only because the band teacher will rip the criticizing person apart if s/he made such a comment. For one, I`ve been playing for almost two years and the instrument has a unique sorta duckish sound. Sounds even more duckish when starting out, double reed instruments are hard to get used to and take a long time to get better with. Two years and I still have problems...

i can`t believe so many people have been even asking if they should quit b/c other people in their "middle school band" make fun of them. the only reason for you to quit shold be if YOU don`t like it.

also, it doesn`t hurt to make fun of yourself every once and a while. it`s good that you know you`re bad, so you can improve, but don`t pity yourself!

i was quite surprised really. I live in england so we dont have school marching bands or anything, and in my school the only wind instruments people learn is flute and clarinet, up until last year in fact all our skool orchestra consisted of was violins, clarinets, and flutes (damn those flautists!). Recently there have been a few ppl learnin alto sax and one tenor sax. I began learning the oboe for the reason that i have just started my a-levels (17/18yr old exams for those in the states that u have to take 4 of before u can get into university). one of my subjects is music and, although i already play grade 5 violin, grade 8 standard bass guitar (5 string of course)and grade 8 classical guitar, i wanted to learn a new instrument, and the object of my affection was to be cor anglais after hearing it in the song `Somedays` by paul mccartney. However, i discovered that the price of such a beautiful instrument would be £1500 second hand (thats $2500), and so i got myself an oboe off ebay. I have never looked back on that day. i have been playing for about 3 months now and with my prior musical knowledge i like to think ive been learning quite fast. I do think it is a difficult instrument to learn due to the double reed, especially as it is the first woodwind instrument i have ever played, and i do have some problems (whenever i try and play a middle c it always sounds squeaky and at least an octave higher - anyone help with that one please?), but i only know one person who really hates it. it does sound quite duckish at times, but nonetheless it si a rewarding instrument. i want to reinforce what has already been said - dont quit unless its because YOU want to, no one else. Also, as the only oboe player i know (or have ever known - my teacher doesnt even play it - he teaches me out of a book, but he is a great musician who plays almost everything else, so he is a big help)i would say that people in my experience dont so much hate it, but rather are intrigued by it. but if anyone can help me with the middle c problem, i would be most grateful, as i can usually manage most other notes including those below mid-c and in the upper register. one other thing, WHAT IS AN EMBOCHURE???
