~Well, it would be really nice if you had a teacher who could make your reeds for you!
~When I can`t get reeds from a teacher, I generally get Jones. If you`re just beginning, I would get a reed that`s Soft or Medium Soft. ~Best of luck and welcome to the "Wonderful World of Oboes"

I would go with Corinne! If your a beginner I suggest you use soft or medium soft I buy Jones reeds too.Eventhough there are sometimes sales that they sale cheap reeds I suggest you still go with Jones I don`t trust those cheap reeds at all.

Everyon eknows that the chance of getting a good commercial reed is slim. I would definetly recommend buying reeds from Bill Roscoe, doublereeds.com . He handmakes all of them and they are all amazing! Oh, I forgot to mention that they are only $10 each!

well, i used a fox reed once (a med soft) and i think it worked quite well. i only used it that once though, b/c i hadn`t asked for it, i hardly ever ask for a brand unless the give me a Rico or something (yick). but it was good, with a nice sound, and lasted a while. going for Fox oboes and reeds???? lol
good luck

Personally, I wouldnt suggest starting on a soft or medium soft reed. When I started playing 5 years ago, I started on a medium-hard. I don`t even know why they make anything below a medium. I wouldn`t suggest playing on anything less than a medium. You`ll get too used to it and it`ll be more difficult when you move up in reed strength. The best reed for a beginer, i guess, is a jones reed. That`s what i played on my first couple of years. Last year I ordered a lot of different brands off of wwbw.com to see which ones i liked better. I really liked the Chartier (it has a nice sound once you break it in, plus it`s cheap-- $4.95 us), the Marlin Lesher, and the Fox Artist reeds. I`ve been alternating between these 3 reeds and they lasted for several months. Personally, I don`t like the woodwind artist reed. I find this one difficult to play. The gower reed is easy to play but it is too shrill and sharp for a band setting but it makes a pretty good practice reed. My best friend (who was 1st band, 1st chair at all state) prefers the dunkel reeds. They are hand made. I have a great sound on these reeds but my band director complains about me being flat when i use them. My reeds that I bought have finally began to die and i haven`t ordered a new supply of them yet. So I`ve found myself using a Jones reed once agian. I forgot how easy the are to play. Oh, and i forgot to mention, NEVER buy a reed with wiring on it. This is put there to try to fix the flaws. I hope all of my aquired information helps somehow.
