One thing that might help is after finding a oboe person/tutor/teacher ask them to make you reeds or ask them to teach you how to make reeds because manufactured ones aren`t the same and just don`t cut it sometimes. I promise if you have someone help you custom your reeds to you, you will sound ten times better and those flutes and clarinets will be begging to switch to oboe.

I`ve heard a lot on this thread about ducks. Get away from that kind of sound. Listen to recordings, hear how a really good Oboist sounds. Check your embrouchure. Firm on the sides, lips loose so that you can feel the vibration of the reed. Do lots of long tones. Listen to get a good sound. Get a pure, less reedy tone. If you can develop a pleasant sound, those picking on the poor, lonely Oboist will be proud at the performance of how good the band sounded when the oboe sang its solos with beauty and grace!

Play out and rest assured that you`re appreciated. A good oboist is appreciated my most band directors.

You`re superior to all of those haters!

I`m in the seventh grade band and there are only two oboes including me. Band is sooo boring right now, and I wish I could go to the eighth grade. I can do all of my major scales at least two octaves and Bb and C three octaves.

im the only one also    16:30 on Saturday, November 19, 2005

Ahahahahah everyone must think there is only 1 oboe player in most bands/symphony orchestras etc... BUT, it is a Good thing to only have 1 oboe player or at most 2, since we had 3 oboe players in our band and I was one of them, and one of the girl, was way below the playing level and it was horrendous. So, I decided it`d be better to move to bassoon, which I did and was good for me, and good for the bass section, but bad for the oboe and flute section because I`m not there to cover the bad player...

So 1 oboe is at most times very good, but 2 good players would be very good as well, with some company.

I know this is said over an over again, but I am the only oboe player in the whole school and feel alone. The flutes and clarinet layers are great friends(except for HER:She puts her flute right in my ear, even though I am 3 inches taller when sitting. anyway, I know how it feels. Oh Yeah, How do I get rid of this Selmer(I play a school instrument).

the good news is that it`s easier to be in tune if you`re the only oboe. This one time at band camp (sorry i had to say it) we had six oboes playing at once. it was so bad that some of the players were asked not to play in certain parts

I just started oboe two weeks ago, and I must say I do quack but the senior who plays it? GORGEOUS GORGEOUS GORGEOUS and people pick on her. It is horrible. I am a flute player and obviously respect her for the talent she possesses so I am not classified as an evil oboe hater. I love it, so just keep your chin up, you will do great!

You know you can play well but your only problem is nerves. I find a good technek is to shut off from all your surroundings, then its just annother practise session at home, and they always go well.
By the way, did everyone here have a natural talent, because im lucky if i practise once every two weeks, and the music teachers in my school are shocked at the progress ive made, im the best in the year 7 band
how on earth did that happen?
