In band we are playing a song and for the first half of the song i play clarinet but in between I have to switch to oboe. But the reed is always dry. Any advice?

Get a little cup and put water in it, put the reed in for the first part of the song, then play it when you need it. Don`t leave the reed in there too long though as it will be tougher to play.

Wow!You play 2 instruments for one song???Cool!I`ve only seen flute players switching to piccolo but nvr clarinet to oboe...yep...totally agree...soaking ur reed in a cup of water is good...also,u can try using ur saliva...tats wat i do...suck it before playin...

Except that when you change your instrument you will probably not have the time to soak the reed in your mouth before playing so I would always in such a situation use a little cup of plain water. That what I do when I change from tenor to clarinet or to oboe between different pieces.

ya i do the same i have to swith from bari sax to tenor in one song becuase my gf our tenor player cant play the tenor solo so i have to throw down the bari bust out the solo on tenor and pick up the bari again, it makes me feel special though, the thing i have found for it though is when your warming up get the sucker as wet as you can then pick up your regular instrument it shouldnt be to dry when you go to play it.

my advice is to get that little cup of water. if you have one that comes with a clip to the stand than thats better since when your playing in band you dont want to the cup on the stand because then it will get in the way with music. Also, unless the time between the start of the piece and when u play the oboe is really long, my advice is to soak the reed in water before the piece in the normal amount of time to soak a reed, then take it out of the cup but dont shake the water off and then puti t in your oboeif some water is still left on the reed then as your playing clarinet, it will keep the reed from drying out and it wont oversoak it and make it too open. also this way you wont have to put the reed in the oboe in the middle of the piece, you could just pick up the oboe and play. this is what i do when i play oboe and english horn in the same piece

hahaha....what sucks is...switchin from Oboe to English Horn..Tuning is definately an issue. Yes, reed cup would be a good idea. You can order them anywhere or just get a film cannister.

Best thing to use is an old film canister for holding the water. Just make sure the water doesn`t go onto the thread around the reed. Sometimes it does funny things because the thread starts to expand....

yeah a film canister is your best bet for soaking your reed. thats what i use b/c they`re free w/ your film and you can toss `em when they start to get nasty. my former oboe teacher used to tell us not to soak the in our spit b/c spit is used to decompose your food and stuff and it`ll cause your reed to break down faster. we were taught to always rinse off our reed before putting it back in the case also.
