I am an oboist and am thinking of also taking up the bassoon. Does anyone know what this is likely to do to my embouchure? I would like to carry on with the oboe as well. Is it a good idea to try and play both?

I don`t see anything wrong with it. Personally, I`d love to do the same thing!

If this helps any I play the clarinet, flute, sax, and piano. The clarinet and sax embouchures are quite similar but the clarinet and flute are very different.

I haven`t found any problems with playing these instruments. Infact, if you every dream of being on broadway you need to be able to play many instruments from one family (proving that others out there play many different "embouchure" instruments). Anyways, I have been told by some that I shouldn`t play the flute because it will ruin my clarinet embouchure but I have also talked to a couple professionals who play both instruments and they say all it can do is improve my embouchure on both. So, I don`t see why the Oboe and Bassoon would be any different. Just keep practicing your oboe and you should have no problems.

embouchure in bassoon is pretty similar to oboe. but picking up the bassoon while playing oboe is kinda expensive. bassoons cost a lot more tthan oboes and youll have to supply urself with bassoon reeds AND oboe reeds. i know a lot of people that play both, but they usually just focus on one and do the other for fun. id say go for it if you like the sound of a bassoon.

i went from bassoon 2 oboe and theyre not that different. the bassoon embouchure is about the same except the top lip is a little different and you use more air. also the fingerings r crazy like u got 9 thumb keys and all this weird stuff. but hey! go 4 it

Like one of you that have responded, I play sax, clarinet, flute, and bassoon. You don`t have to worry about you mouth on piano. I can also play some brass. I don`t see how playing more instruments will hurt. It will make your mouth muscles stronger. Not much else except it will be fun
