I would like to know whether oboe is really hard to learn? if I have experience in playing clarinet?
is it much harder than learning the clarinet? say, on embouchure or breathing...
Thanks.

I play both clarinet and oboe. The embouchure is completely different. At the beginning, the oboe is much more difficult to get progress than the clarinet.
The instrument cost of oboe is much higher than a clarinet. A student clarinet (plastic) costs around $300 to $400 while a student oboe costs $1200 to $2000 ! As a advanced oboist, you have to learn to make your own reeds. The commercial available reeds only suitable for your first 2 years of playing.
But there are fewer oboist than clarinetists. Therefore you can easily find a oboe position in your community orchestra if you play pretty well.

uhh yea, the emboushure and stuff is completely different. However, if you know of a good private teacher, then you might want to give it a shot. if you really want the transition to be easy then get a good teacher. otherwise its frustrating

Boo! Pick one or the other! Oboe require so much of a different embouchure b/c the reed....many people have the tendency to hold onto the reed very tightly! when clarinet no offense really doesn`t require as much embouchure as the oboe does. But the big thing is to play with the air with the oboe! The oboe is incredibly hard to learn especially when you start talking reeds which suck major a** and are really hard to make....you will constantly be learning.
