I have heard rumors that oboes can play down to low A (below middle C). My plastic selmer can play only down to low Bb. Also, on some professional models what is the tiny key to the left of the Eb key? Thanks...

If you want to hear *really* low oboe notes, listen to a bass oboe. Believe it or not, there is such a thing ans it sounds so cool! It is a full octave lower than the regular oboe. The thing`s worth a fortune though....

Most full conservatory oboes only go down to a Bb, but they are now making oboes with a low A key, I think with Royal model Lorees and some Marigaux oboes.

Actually I think Mr. Klein of Chicago has an oboe that plays down to a low A. He had it specially made for him. Really neat!!

The standard is Bb, anything extra added would be bogus...I have not seen any sheet music for oboe that has a low A. If you really like alto sounds for the oboe, go for an English horn, that is better.
