Hello, I have a couple of questions. I`ve asked this to several others but I thought it`d be good to get some more opinions.

I am a sophomore in high school, playing since I was in fifth grade, and plan to continue through college. Right now, I plan on being a music performance major (on oboe), and I don`t think that`s going to change. My parents have even said before that they see me doing something in music. Anyway, I`m currently playing on an intermediate yamaha oboe, and have been for a year. For what it`s worth, I used to play on a selmer.

Seeing that I`ll be applying for college in a year, would it be a wise decision to upgrade to a better oboe now, or wait a year or two? The oboe I have right now doesn`t play very well (albeit it isn`t the worst thing in the world), and my dad got it from the all-purpose rent-to-own music store without letting me even try it out. I`ve brought up this fact to him before, but the music store guy told him "this oboe will last her through her college career!" (I think he was just trying to sell the instrument), so my dad doesn`t see why I would ever want a new one.

I hope I don`t sound like a naive spoiled little underclassman who desperately wants a new oboe, because I`m not. I know it would be the best idea to ask my teacher, but I don`t want to ask her about it, if it`s actually a totally bogus idea!

Thanks for any feedback.

I think it`s a very good idea, you will never become a good oboe player with an oboe that doesn`t play well!

GO LOREE or YAMAHA! haha yeah it is a good idea to upgrade your oboe. When I stopped using my Fox 330 (I also started out on Selmer roo-absolute crap)and bought a Loree my sound got deeper and fuller. I suggest if you are going to be a performance major I really suggest getting a really nice new wooden one or if you can find a good used one go for it! but ask your teacher!

CHRIS

P.S. I hope this helps!

yah, talk to your teacher...you should be happy with your oboe no matter what salesman say!
