I got my RIEC about 3 weeks ago.
Instructions said not to play more than 30 minutes per day,
swab upper joint every 10 minutes, alternate days playing another oboe (to allow sufficient time for the oboe to dry), & oil bore once per week. This is for the first four to six weeks. Also, don`t blow warm air through a cold oboe, keep the humidifer in the case filled with water, and use a silver polishing cloth on keys, once per week.

I just finished 30 minutes of playing my new RIEC. It (or I) get better each time. This is what I like about wood, i.e., you can imagine that it changes for the better with age. Low notes are resonant, which I like, and the high notes seem to pleasantly "sing".
The RIEC is darker sounding, than the brighter sounding Fox 300 plastic oboe I also had during the the trial period with the RIEC. My rental Yamaha plastic 211 is also brighter sounding than the RIEC, and sounds similar to the Fox 300. The RIEC feels (and probably is) much heavier in weight than than the plastic Yamaha. All nice instruments in their own "way".
My RIEC came with two Rigoutat swabs. One for the upper joint, and a larger one for the lower joint. A small, plastic music stand was also included with it. There were other goodies that came with it, but I think they were added by the seller. These included two small humistats, an oiler for the keys, and a turkey feather. It comes with a canvas case with zippers, and tie down straps to hold the oboe. The straps were getting in the way, so I removed (cut them off) them. I`d prefer a different style case.

Did you buy the RIEC from Nora POst? I bought my RIEC in February from her and I got the wooden RIEC with the plastic top joint. My stand partner has the all-wood RIEC and they both sound exactly the same. No one has ben able to tell them apart when I play both. Nora Post had suggested the RIEC with the plastic top joint for the mere reason that I had no way of cracking it. She also added that it has been proven that the same oboe in, wood or plastic, can`t be differentiated between. I guess that ususally, plastic oboes are made with less care, which ultimately makes the sound suffer. But a plastic oboe that has as much attention as a wooden oboe is just as valuable.
Has anyone else gotten the RIEC with a plastic top joint? What do you think about it?

David,
You are are referring to crowing the reed, i.e., the reed is not in the oboe, correct?
Your lips should be on the thread, not the cane, do not hold the reed with your fingers, and do not put pressure on the reed. As you go from blowing softly (ppp), to medium (pp), to loudest (p) you should get three octaves of C, i.e., C not an A.
If you do not get a C, the reed may need to be adjusted, or something else.

David,
The reed might be okay. The crow sound is not pleasant. You can get an idea of what a crow sounds like, on the following web page.
http://www.yefchak.com/reed/process_page.htm
You can also listen to the crow, and get oboe info on the following web site. The crow on the first web page is the way my reeds sound.
http://www.finermusic.com/classroom/exercise4/exercise4grades6_8.html
The reed can be adjusted, but your teacher will need to do it. Also, your teaher may make reeds for you, which should be better than the ones you can buy in a store.
Work with the one you have, until you take lessons. Also, reeds don`t last very long, so expect to buy many more.
Eventually, you`ll be making your own.
