Have just started playing again after 20 years using a Selmer Model 1492B Basic Conservatory Oboe. My teacher used to take care of reeds and everything.

Any ideas why the F-sharp in the 2nd octave should frequently play flat? Similarly when gliding from lower octave C to second octave D the oboe invariably squawks. I have a brand new medium soft reed.

Thanks

It`s most likely the Selmer. If that`s the oboe you used to play 20 years ago, it`s the oboe. I`ve had come across all bad selmers (and bundis). Try opening your reed by seasing the sides of the reed gently.

I am an adult beginner who also started on a Selmer Bundy two years ago. They have many problems with notes just not ringing through nicely, and my instructor had to modify not only my reeds, but "jimmy rig" the oboe at times to make it function half way properly. I switched to a Yamaha 211 student model about a year ago, which is much better by leaps and bounds. I found mine used on eBay for a decent price and have no complaints, so you don`t have to invest thousands. My teacher is very impressed with the Yamaha student model`s quality. It`s hell and gone from the Bundy. Consider trying one! ( :
