Hi. I just had a question. I`ve been reading many posts that people have switched from clarinet to oboe. Would that be difficult? the figerings are different and it`s in a different key. Well I`ve been playing oboe for six years and I was forced to go to flute because my new director didn`t reccomend marching oboe. And I found flute very similar to oboe..well, the fingerings anyway. But anyway, I was hoping someone could clarify me on this

I just switched from flute to oboe a few months ago. The biggest problem I have is the ombechure change. Flutes require no chops to play, and are quite the opposite from oboe. Its very hard to hold notes out on a flute. Now that I play oboe I have forgotten my flute ombechure so make sure you work to keep both up.

I went from flute to clarinet, to saxophone, and recently to oboe. I still play the flute. The oboe adversely affected my flute embouchure. I need to practice the flute before the oboe. Oboe first, doesn`t cut it.

hi again
oh you mean oboe adversely affects flute? that wouldn`t be very good...
i played clarinet too, but my fingers were too short. haha
and it was very difficult because of the different fingerings of flute and clarinet. oboe is very similar...
i didn`t recognize difficulties of my embochoure when i played clarinet and then flute.
what did you mean with your last sentence `oboe first,...`? i don`t understand it... sorry, i am from germany...
bye

Ines,
My problem is with the flute embouchure.
If I practice flute, and then the oboe, no problem playing the flute.
If I practice oboe, and then the flute, I have a problem playing the flute.
If you have no problem playing clarinet and flute, then maybe you won`t have any problem playing oboe and flute.

hi bill
thank you again... i am very relieved. but i know what you mean with playing oboe/clarinet and then flute. sometimes i had a problem when i played clarinet very long. the muscles where aching and i wasn`t able to play flute. i would love love love to learn oboe, but i will study music when i come back from the usa and flute will be my first instrument. it would have been a pity if this destroyed my embochoure...

Ines,
Why don`t you rent an oboe, to try, before you buy an oboe? Is this an option while you are in the USA?
I am renting an oboe. It`s a plastic Yamaha 211. It plays nicely, but doesn`t have a full set of keys.
I just got 2 oboes to trial, for 5 days, before buying. One is a used plastic Fox 300, and the other is a new Rigoutat RIEC.

hi bill
i will rent an oboe before buying one, but if i love it as i love flute, i would like to buy one as soon as possible, because i don`t want to spend too much money on renting one. but i think i decide to buy the buffet 4012 for $1269. perhaps not as good as yamaha, but it is grenadilla and oboe will only be my hobby. i want to buy a good flute for college too and this is far more important!
how long do you play?

If you play clarinet now and are switching to oboe don`t keep playing clarinet because the clarinet embachure totally ruins, and is the oppposite of the oboe embachure.

Actually, some of the clarinet fingerings are similar to flute fingerings which are similar to oboe fingerings. I find that they are all connected. The only thing that I had to get used to were the different embouchures. It`s not that hard once you get the hang of it.

I play clarinet and have started oboe, I found that all it did to my clarinet playing was make me sqwak for a few days while I got used to it, then it improved it. Good luck to you!

i have played oboe for a while, about 4 years, and am now beginning to play the clarinet and I am finding that the problem mainly is understanding key signiture, for instance the G on the oboe isnt the same as the G on clarinet... its weird... and the ombuchure is weird too.
i think the change from instrument to instrument is difficuly for almost every instrument, except clarinet and sax, because the ombuchure is different and you have to get used to it.
