I got this crazy idea last summer to "try" the oboe after years of being fascinated by it. I am an "older beginner" (over 50) with a music (mostly vocal and theory) background and got myself a used Linton last September. With the help of the local high school band director we tweaked it up and I was on my way to tormenting my wife and high school aged kids. They all thought I was nuts and still do!

Well, this weekend I am playing in my first community band concert (we live in a small town) along with my daughter that plays trombone. The high school kids and the other adults that are playing have been very supportive. We had to modify a few portions of a piece or two but I`m jumping in with both feet and having a wonderful time!
Yes, I have a long way to go technically, but so far the whole experience has been delightful and I am wondering why didn`t I do this years ago.

To all you young beginners out there, don`t be discouraged because it IS a tough instrument to play. Stick with it (practice, practice, practice) and be the unique musician that you are to become!

I just found this forum, but I want to say that that last bit of your first post is encouraging. I have just started learning the oboe this summer. I`ve been play for a couple months now with one lesson a week, and it is extremely tough!! I just have to try not to get discouraged!!

*PEACE*OUT*

its tough at the beginning. it didnt take me long to get notes out it just took a long time to get the ombeshure (cant spell it lol) right...killed my lips.
you`ve already done a concert?! blimey it took me about 6 months before i did my first one!!
im happy to give any advice if you need any!
