I recently purchased a Korg CA-30 tuner. It was new, and slightly less than $15 on eBay. I`m very satisfied with it.
I do have an old Korg tuner that`s okay too, but I like the "needle" on the CA-30 better.

I also have two software tuners. The nice thing about the software tuners is that they show the frequency spectrum, e.g., amplitude and pitch of a note`s fundamental and harmonics. One of the tuners even shows the fingering of the note being played. Unfortunately, it doesn`t have an oboe, so I select flute - not for the fingering, but because it`s in the key of C, like the oboe.
Maybe I`ll write to the developer and ask him to add an oboe. The URL for reading about, and downloading (free) the tuner is given below. I`ve been using it for years, upgrading as upgrades become available. There`s also a metronome, and tuning fork.

I use the tuner to test new reeds, and adjustments to reeds. I also practice scales, first with the tuner, and then without the tuner, paying attention to what the scale sounds like, i.e., am I playing the notes in tune with each other.

How many others regularly use a tuner to practice with?

I use a tuner when I practice quite frequently, but make sure that I don`t use it too much in order to get a better ear for the sound itself. I have a tuner/metronome/tone generator that I like very much. It`s from SABINE and is called a MetroTune MT9000. I also use the metronome to practice but, like the tuner, only maybe half the time so that I don`t get too reliant on getting the beat from other sources than myself.

I ALWAYS practice with a tuner, since I can`t stand being out of tune, and by doing so I can improve my pitch. I`m not really sure what I have... it works, so that`s really all I think that matters.

Bill_D : I purchased the same metronome yesterday! Except I paid the full price @ music123.com!! ^_^ The reviews were excellent and I can`t wait to get it seeing as my old metronome has been dead for most of the summer.

The maker, Tatsuaki Kuroda san, of the free software tuner is willing to and an oboe to the selection of instruments.

He requested a fingering chart and a proper size drawing of an oboe. I emailed him some web pages with fingering charts. Does anyone know where (a web page) I can find a "good" drawing of an oboe? It needs to "look" similar to the drawings of the other instruments so he can readily add to the software

It turns out that I had to make a "drawing" of the oboe as a bit map. It`ll take a couple of months for Tatsuaki Kuroda san to add the oboe to his software tuner.
