I have heard that playing a brass instrument will wreck your eumbichure if you play oboe. Is this true? I was thinking about learning trumpet or somthing for marching band because we currently have one brass player. (and like...15 woodwind- and liek... 10-15 percussionists) and I was wondering how this would effect my oboe playing skills.

Yes, Brass=bad, it will ruin your embouchure. But one of the worst is Saxophone. It`s just a bad idea. Do bells in marching band.

I did clarinet in marching band, and I learned how to control each embouchure, just dont stop practicing. Plus the clarinet section is the best when it comes to personality =).

Whoops. Too late. I already picked up baritone. WOOT WOOT! I`m the base line! And I also play sax, and flute.
I can still play each of my instruments fine. Like above (forgot name and too lazy to hit back - sorry) I can separate the different eumbicures when I`m playing each. And according to my tutor, who was last year one of my senior buddies, I actually picked up brass and partials really quickly... so I guess it would just depend on the person...

ACTUALLY, I`m a oboe major, and we are FORBIDDEN to even SPEAK of playing anything with an embrosure at all. Flute is ok, but anything else, hoo boy, kiss your career as a pro goodbye.

Im an 8th grader, and our band teachers are okay with us switching around. I played flute, then switched to oboe. I still play both. And now that our school`s Jazz Band is starting, they are letting me switch to Baritone Saxophone. Im acually picking it up pretty quick, and I play all of them daily. It doesn`t have any effect on my embrocure at all.. And it acually helps me play oboe because you need bigger lungs to play Bari since its such a big instrument. Just as an example of how big & heavy it is, Im about 5`3 and I have to stand up when I play it because it pulls me off of the chair and then the neckstrap chokes me...lol.

I play oboe as my major instrument at college, but I also play tenor saxophone in the marching band. It is bad at the beginning, but after a year, I have learned to control my embouchure. It just takes alot of practice

hmm... no wonder my band teacher doesn`t want me to switch to anything and i mean ANYTHING except maybe bassoon, he`s probably afraid i`m going to mess up my embouchure.

I doubled on alto sax for marching band last year and it didn`t wreck my embouchure.
If you want to be safe, just in case, play mallets in your marching band.
