I was just wondering what other people`s processess are for opening up the reed. I usually start to shape that tip and scrape it down, then when it`s pretty thin, i clip the tip. But if there are better ways, please tell me the way you like!! I`m having major issues with this. Thanks

Oh, come on! I need help! Okay, so you have a blank. How do you go about opening up the top of the reed? And when? etc.

that`s pretty much what I do, been successful so far with it
what`s more important is the exact dimensions/thickness of the finished reed, just be careful to just barely cut the hinge off the cane in your initial clipping.

It depends on the size of the reed. If you measure the reed up to 74mm your finishing product should be about 71 or 70 mm in length. You must do what your saying about scraping the reed down or if you clip the tip too thick you run a risk of cracking the cane. Hope this helps!

That is about what I do. I wouldn`t wait till it got very thin. I would also make sure you take even amounts off of each side.

Hi Kevin,

What I suggest is to mark with a pencil a line about one third of the reed down from the top.

Then what you want to do is to scrape a flat channel between what would be the spine and the rails (sides). Make sure that each scrape goes off the end of the reed, and that each successive scrape starts in front of the previous one.

This should give you a nice taper so that the end of the blank is thinner than what comes behind it. Start on the left side of what would be the spine, then scrape the right side.

Turn the reed over and do the same on the other side. Remember to keep both sides as even as possible.

When the end of the blank seems thin enough to clip, clip it with a razor blade. I don`t like using a knife for clipping reeds. Razor blades do a better cleaner job, thus helping the response of the reed.

When the blank is opened, slip the blades.
