I am a semi-beginner oboe player (started about 4 months ago.) I use a fibercane soft or medium reed, and I was wondering, would cane be alright to switch to? My band director told me you have to often soak cane reeds first. I know cane reeds are less expensive than fibercane. Any suggestions?

I just started playing on cane reeds after a year of the oboe, and now after 2 years I`ve started using professional reeds. I suggest waiting a few months before using the cane reeds religiously, but you may want to try them now to get used to the feel and sound. Good luck!

i have to disagree, i started about 2 to 3 years ago and started strait on cane. A fibercane reed makes a much worse sound, and further more it fails to help you create a proper armbucher. I say switch as soon as you can and don`t look back

fibercane will wreck your embouchure, and will let you get by without supporting, not to mention the obvious tone color/tuning problems. Stick with cane (arundo donax).

CANE!!! Definetly. I`ve used fibercane, cane and plastic reeds and believe me, CANE CANE CANE!! I have been playing Oboe for about six years and definetly stick with cane. YOU do have to soak them but that`s not a big deal. A film canister is a nice little reed soaker dealie. But cane will give you the best sound
