i have a problem. i`m a 6th year oboeist and when i play it still sounds like i`m trying to skin a baby with a golf club. what should i do? i guess its a good thing snakes dont have ears huh? because with our instrument, i`d think it would try to dig them out.

fyi if you want an original composition for oboe that has snake charmer qualities you might want to look into escales no II from portso f call by jacques ibert. you could get it from music minus one

I`m a first year student on the oboe. I`m in grade 9, and I chose this instrument for my beginner music class. I must say, once I got past the stage of it sounding like a duck being strangled, I quite enjoy it`s unique sound. I searched snake charmer under oboe, and I got this forum. I appreciate all the replies!

This was a nice topic, but where are all these people now, the people who were here on this forum a year ago? Yeah, some with real names and addresses (unlike me, hehe). It looks like there`s been alot of turnover. Just wonderin`

To still new: forum`s change quickly. Often only a few people stay in a forum for years. Sometimes forum friends just drift apart and go elsewhere. I`ve been posting here for half a year or so, but I mainly post on other forums now.
PS: By the way, you`ve been posting for a while, how long until you`re not new?
To everyone else:
snake charming sound;
F#-G-A-Bb-A-G-F# repeat
exotic sounding scale;
G-A-Bb-C#-D-Eb-F#-G
and just a fun scale;
G-A-Bb-Cb-D-Eb-Fb-G
I don`t know how these work on the oboe, but they`re entertaining on viola.

Dunno...
Try a slow time with these notes MI (2/4 and an half or as you prefer) and then semibiscromes: SI RE MI FA LA SOL# FA MI (as the first) and then again SI RE MI FA LA SOL# FA MI and you can finish with DO (long) RE DO (done fast, like an acciaccatura) SI (long) LA (long) SI LA (like an acciaccatura) SOL# (long) FA (long) SOL# FA (like an acciaccatura) MI (and maybe a trill)...
If you don`t know european notes: DO = C RE = D MI = E FA = F SOL = G LA = A SI = B

Well, you don`t need an instrument to charm a snake. First of all it has to be trained, and snakes have no ears so they can`t hear, they just move with the motion of the instrument.
I have the essential elements book and it has snake charmer in it but it`s the most retarded and doesn`t sound like anything, it`s just a practice music for learning accidentals. There is another one, called the Egyptian Dance and it sounds really nice and will probably sound good on the oboe. I play it on the flute and the flute and oboe are in the same range. Right? Well anyway if anyone wants it, I`ll scan it and send it because it`s a bit long.
