I have learned to play the oboe on the music school, which is in the city where I live, but I live in the Netherlands. It can be quit different in other countries.

I learned in Middle School and we worked on it everyday. But I didn`t learn specifics of holding reed and everything in school and air control in school; I had to find a private teacher for that. Everyone usually learns an instrument. OBOE IS THE BEST and ONLY cool people play it!haha

You can learn the basics at school. But band directors are ususally not familiar with oboe. This is because oboe is an orchestral instrument compared to a band instrument. To learn the correct technique, talk to a private teacher.

I think learning oboe at school is just in the USA, isn`t it ??

I learned it at school as well, but the instrument wasn`t the best.

I had to teach myself how to play until middle school and even then it was mostly learning on my own because their are so many flutes (glares at the evil flutes)
