Hello friends in the oboe world!

I was just wondering if there are any adult players out there that post at this forum. (Nothing against the younger players )

I am a 35 year old in New Jersey who has been playing the oboe for a little over 2 years. Any others out there?

AARP has had me on their membership list for a few years. I have been abusing my oboe (and neighbors) for only a couple of weeks.

35 (for another week anyways). I`ve played flute consistently since I was a kid and played oboe throughout high school and college, but only picked it back up 2 yrs ago. It`s amazing how much you forget in 15 years

Well "Hello" fellow adult oboists! Nice to meet all of you.

Ninafire, I, too, am 35, and only until Nov. 8th (my birthday)! When is your birthday?

Bill_D...

Whereabouts in New Jersey do you live? I live in Audubon - near Cherry Hill, Camden, etc. (approximately 10-15 minutes or so from Philadelphia)

Very cool, Ninafire!

I`m not so much nervous about turning 36 as I am about being 4 years away from 40!! Yikes!

Would love to share oboe thoughts with you, or advise from you anytime you might be interested. My e-mail is PSOOboeFan@aol.com.

Whereabouts do you reside?

(Of course, I meant "advice" in that last post. Oops.)

Bill_D... too bad you don`t live closer. I would love to play duets with another oboist from time to time.

I live in Wisconsin now. I spent some time living on the East Coast though. I went to school in MA and briefly lived in NJ (Nutley, NJ to be exact).

I currently play in a very good community wind ensemble. There are actually 3 oboists this semester, and I`m bringing up the rear because the other 2 (both with oboe performance degrees) are absolutely amazing oboists. I was recruited almost 2 years ago from the flute section. That`s why I started to play oboe again

How/why/when did you guys all start?

I picked up the oboe in July of 2002. Since I was in my late teens, (I am now 35), I had always wanted to write symphonies for orchestras. I thought one of the best ways to better understand what I would be writing for would be to pick up various instruments and learn how to play them and see how music is written for them. I wanted to learn at least one stringed instrument, one brass, and one woodwind. Oboe, violin, and trumpet were at the top of my list. Years went by and I never did study any of them. Finally, two years ago, I got fed up with my ever growing list of regrets in my life. I thought to myself, "I`m only in my 30`s. This list should not be this long." It was then that I decided to start looking for an oboe instructor. The first person I contacted for lessons actually tried to DISCOURAGE me from picking up the oboe. I almost let her! Thank goodness I contacted someone else. My current teacher is the GREATEST and very encouraging!

I now play 2nd oboe for a community band, I have been asked to play 2nd oboe in a community orchestra, I played at a friend`s recital, and the crowning achievement to date was playing on stage at Heinz Hall in June 2004 with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (my favorite orchestra), next to my oboe-playing idol, PSO Principal Oboist, Cynthia Koledo DeAlmeida. (This was for a Community Side By Side concert - amateurs played next to their professional counterparts. I was personally invited by Cindy herself.)

It has been an incredible 2+ years and going, and to think it almost never happened!

I have a long way to go in my studies and abilities, but I am loving every minute of it!
