why are people so cruel to us?
i can understand why non band people call us clarinets, but when band people call us clarinets i get like ahh
last year a band director called me a clarinet!
how rude. they should learn what we play.

I really agree with you, I`ve no idea why it is so, I think some people just think the know something from music...

I play clarinet and oboe, and I can understand why people get confused, but oboes are better anyways.

Uhm in my band oboe is the most important instrument it has beautiful solos...

But many people think oboe and clarinet are the same thing... my God, they`re so different!!!

oboes are awesome... i mean, they do sound like dying ducks in the beginning, but they become beautiful sounding thingies... beats the sound of a clarinet anyday IMO, and i used to play clarinet.. one of the reasons i switched to the bassoon... more than one clarinet playing the same thing sounds so weird.. it echoes funneh... haha. and how would orchestras tune? my band tunes to the clarinet... holy jeez.. =/ they`re better off tuning to me lol... the instrument that needs to switch certain joints to tune.. haha.

As an oboist in High School, I found out immediately, and for 3 long years that "people" are cruel, abusive or intolerant of things they don`t understand, or of minorities. Guys on the horns thought they were more macho, as well. The fact that the teacher liked oboe and encouraged me only made the other`s react with more rudeness. I could write a book now, but that`s the short story. In the end, I tried to ignore the idiots, and I have to say - I got tough and grew up (morally, socially) faster. I`d do it all again. Yeah. My F-horn buddy`s always throwing cracks at me and or my oboe. My other F-horn buddy (she`s also our DM) always yells at him for it.
A while back when I was talking about how much money I would to earn to get an english horn to my f horn buddy (the female one), my clarinet buddy turns to me and asks: `Arn`t english horns and french horns the same thing?` I then went through how different they were with her for at least 10 minutes. She hasn`t confused the two again.

I think oboes are great instruments. They are much better than flutes, which sound like toy instruments, or clarinets, which sound a bit boring. I think oboes and bassoons are the best woodwind ( and don`t forget heckelphones! )
I`d play the oboe if I had more time and money; smaller hands; infinite patience; and no social life. I`m far too busy at the moment to play two instruments though...

The reason they don`t like you is because they won`t try themselves. You can puff on a trumpet, but not an oboe. That`s it, really.
