omg i hate the "hobo" joke!! do you guys get people who who call it an "elbow" ? i HATE that! i got the dying duck one all the time. still get it too because the other oboe player plays really loudly and has a really bad tone.

I play clarinet in Marchin band and oboe in concert and I hate the stupid HOBO joke!!! my trumpet and clarinet friends are always like ur just an oboeless hobo!! We are always so hated, its so unfair. We add a lot to the band and when played correctly we sound beautiful! GO OBOES!! double reeds will someday rise and takeover the band world mwhahahahaha!

well, to tell you the truth, hobos are the european names for oboes. It is not meant to be an insult or anything but it IS the OFFICIAL european nae for an oboe. I have so many Johan De Meij scores and they all wrote: For hobos 1 and 2...

oboes are awesum... everyone knows that, its important to orchestra, its used to tune, its used for many diff meldoies, and its rare to find oboist.. and okey.

who cares what people say about us or oboes.. you know that oboes are awesum instruments.. they can go F**K themselves.. cuz if they say oboes are crap, sound lyke a dying duck, or a hoboe.. THEY DONT KNO JACK S**T!! because oboes are one of the most PRETTYFULL instruments and aslong as you kno that, you dont need to care wat other people are saying.

i used to get so angry when people called me hoboe, g*ybo LOLZ, em dying duck, weapon of mass destruction.. i got all of that, but after i while i just couldnt be buggered to care, i jst learnt to live with it.. because i kno the oboe is THE SEXIEST intrument and i dont care what they say..they jst have a bad musicianship.

This is my second year playing the oboe in my middle school (I started last year),and I get so sick of the jokes! My other musicians are always saying:
"Hey Hobo"
"Hey there, ya elbow"
"How`s it going ya dying duck?"
and other cruel things like that. The way to make them stop is: Have them try to play your oboe. When someone makes a joke, I have them try to play my oboe, & they most likely can`t even get a note out, so it looks like the joke is on them. Oboes aren`t that pretty by themselves, but with the whole band, they are B-E-A-utiful!!!! Oh yea, basoons are beautiful! I love the basoon sound!

Well, first of all, the oboe is really an orchestral instrument. I played in a band for over four years before I found an orchestra to play in.It`s True! It`s True! Composers of band music either don`t care to write much for Oboe or don`t expect much from new players.If the director chooses a piece transcribed for band, sometimes the cool solos are given to trumpet,clarinet,etc.
Now in an orchestra that plays mainstream works, not beginner selections, the Principle Oboist is second only to the Concert Master (Principle Violin) in importance.
Also, sometimes it may seem that the Oboists are the band nerds. Ouch! You play a somewhat obscure instrument that is difficult, great when played well and let`s face it:This is not the instument for the intellectually challenged!

Listen you guys I love that song ... it is sung so soft and sweet. It is not ment to be a cruel joke or make fun of anyone. The song came out way back in the 1930`s when there were so many men riding the rails and it cheers me up when I sing it.

Oboes like.. the HotTest instrument.. like.. fcuk me!! isnt it like THE best instrument in the orchestra.. it makes such a pweety sound and a PENETRATING (hahaha love that word) tone!! .. its hands down.. sexiest sounding instrument int he orchestra!

Every oboe player seem to get insulted eh? My new director said i was so out sitting among the clarinets(the old director had me between clarinets) and he actually said tat i was lik a chicken among the ducks. -_-"

If I could only marching oboe during the season... [I was actually thinking of that, but then got worried about how many reeds I could`ve broken...] As of now, I march with the flute. And honestly it`s not that bad but still...

Just wait... as soon as I get my hands on an oboe, I`ll blow you all away! Literally!

lol yeah. oboes are very beautiful instruments! but when you`re in middle school, everyone hates us because some of us sound like dying ducks still! but they just don`t understand. cause like the oboe is like the core of a symphony

The hobo joke is sooo annoying. Last year when I first started playing someone asked me what it was. I said, "It`s oboe." "A hobo? What kind of instrument is that?" says the deafest person in the world.

Let`s see... hardest instrument to play... lots of controversy over that. I was sitting and band yesterday having an argument over the hardest instrument to play with a trombone player. He`s like "I have to deal with 6 positions and a trigger," I say, "I have to deal with 29 keys and a double reed." He still didn`t beleive me so I pulled out a reed. "Blow into that," I said and I won the argument. For me oboe isn`t that hard as I started on it last year. It just sounds so graceful mixed in with an orchestra.

I know! When people asked me which instrument I was playing I was all, oboe and they were WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO PLAY THAT?! Why wouldn`t I want to play an oboe?
