Hello My fellow double reeders.
You know when your listening to a classical station and after that pause you hear that oboe and bassoon come in to make that transition. You put your hands behind your head, recline your seat, and make that comment in your head, "OOOOOOOH That was nice" Let our part of music speak for it self. You and I know that We Oboist are key to any Orchestra. Remember! Your not playing for your fellow orchestra members. Your playing for them, the listener, and for the love of the instrument. Not for those who are ignorant. But for those who understand that part of music that We oboist do so well. I love it . Those who make fun now will be listening to you play, while you get paid to do it. Yah Baby!

Sorry, don`t get me wrong, but why are you all worrying about it? Yes, it is a known fact: Oboes are not well liked within the orchestra/band. I mean, sh*t happens! I have been playing oboe in the band for about three months now and I just nod and ignore. I have been called the "dying duck" the "traitor" for switching. YOU know that you are an amazing player, that the oboe is indeed a beautiful instrument so why worry over who hates who? That the clarinets whine that they are the better instrument? This is a battle that will just never be settled! In all reality, it will continue on. Flutes, clarinets, saxes, trumpets, etc. will continue to think of the the oboe as the "hobo" and the "dying duck". It is the way of life. So yes, like someone said on here, they grew up faster socially and emotionally because of it. Stop worrying about what others think, GROW UP, and just do what you do best by blowing people away with your beautiful sound...PLAY. And everyone one here says we are the better people, the better players? One can start by saying "well they suck....blah blah blah blah." It hurts us when we are told these mean, immature things. Maybe the pot should stop calling the kettle black?

so may people think im a clarinetist-its gets irratating a fter a while
my conductor called me a duck the other day-the word were``just ignore the duck in the corner``-and this was coming from a bassoonist! So we came to an agreement that i was a duck and she was a foghorn!
And if were hobos then remember that bassoons are faggots!

Personally, I just started playing oboe in band alongside my friend, and haven`t been made fun of yet. I was, however, called a traitor by one of my trumpet buddies. Won`t he be surprised to learn I`m still in jazz band and brass quintet!

ANyway, this isn`t really something to be worried about. If all defenses fail, go to a musical joke site. My friend in honors started telling jokes about my oboe, so I`m gonna go find some to throw in his face about his violin! Sweet victory...

haha yeah i played oboe for 3 years and it used to bother me at the beginning when people would underestimate the ability and effort to play the oboe because it`s really one of the harder instruments to play but i got used to it after a while and it didn`t bother me. i got called the hobo player for the longest time and it was particularly interesting when people thought the fire alarm at school was going off when i played but oh well... people are people i guess.

yeah i get your point
lol, my orchy conductor told me to hurry up and get out my clarinet...i told her it was called an oboe..she got cut. But yeah..its an incredible insult and all the clarinets think its hilarious.
but dont you thihnhk that the conductor really picks on the oboe...or maybe its just me..she said something about the oboists rebellious personality..

I said earlier that I hadn't been picked on...

I got an interesting insult (it was more of a joke, because it was a sad attempt for an insult) from my older clarinet friend. He said,

"There's a hobo in your oboe and a crumpet in your trumpet."

Sad attepmt. The guest conductor at our district music festival had us all tuning. He called every single group (every sax, every single instrument to tune) EXCEPT for the 3 oboes that were right in his line of vision! I mean, hello! Are you blind?! it was kind of good though, because a screw came loose, and my C#/Eb keys actually snapped off mid-rehearsel. Oh, yeah. it was fun.

I go to n orchestra at my school(were not great) with about 10 flutes 7 clarinets,3 violins a tenor sax, sometimes a normal sax and me-(i sometimes double as a violin if the violin part needs more volume)
Everyone is asked to tune exept me and when we go thruogh in part he just misses me out completely! Hes a really horrible man(clarinettist) and well, he takes his tea in the loo, what more can i say
But it really annoys me when people say to me things like 'So is your clarinet mended today',when i first got my oboe(toby) i had a note from the office saying 'Your clarinet is avaliable now!!'

I also got annoyed by the head of music. People in my class said they thought the sound was cool - obviously the teacher can't take in that she doesn't have the amazing skills of us oboists. She thinks that the oboe is squawky!!!

I think she went green for a few seconds. And by the way she wasn't commenting on my playing just oboes in general!
