There`s only 1 boy oboe in my whole school, so I think it`s a female instrument.

hmm... well, oboes are generally played by girls these days b/c guys like brass (which i tihnk is stupid, i love my bassoon)... still, i consider it unisex... i mean, it`s not like an instrument where there are almsot no guys... (like the flute... 6 girls, 1 guy... =/ lol) the most evenly spread instrument gender-wise is the sax in my opinion... too many guys in brass...

I agree that this is a stupid question. But I think it`s about 50/50 and unisex to play the Oboe.

I think its a unisex instrument, as all instruments should be.

^yea, all instruments SHOULD be unisex... iunno, some ppl are weird and they think they need to play a certain instrument b/c they`re a certain gender... if my actual instruments had a gender.. they`d all be female... cuz if i named them and they were guys, that`d be kinda.. ihh... lol...

I prefer male players, even if I`m a girl! But I don`t think it`s important.

This is the most idiotic question ever. I play oboe and I am a male. There are 2 females, 2 males in my band. All instruments should be for everyone, regardless of gender. I am taking up the flute soon for marching band, because personally I think it has one of the most pure and beautiful sounds in the band (besides the oboe). I also like instruments that play solos, like the flute. I do this, even when much of this prejudiced place thinks the flute is feminine.

I have no clue who ever came up with the gender of certain instruments. I am in college studying oboe. I am the only male oboe major at my university, but that doesn`t mean anything.

I see in the flute section, which you would assume as a "female" instrument, there are numerous males in that section. The same goes for in the clarinet section. Percussion is the same, just in reverse. I see many females studying percussion.

In conclusion, the genderizing of instrumentalists is idiotic and downright stupid. I think that this thread should be deleted.

just stating my opinion...
