Well, anything worth doing takes time and practice. Everyone, even the best oboe player of all time was in your shoes. What seperates you from him? Time and practice. You have played flute and piano, so you know something about playing music, so you will probably catch on faster than when you started playing them. Actually I started with the clairnet, and the oboe takes less air than it, but more pressure. But embelesure is more important. Good luck! PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!

I`m having trouble making my first notes on the oboe. I`m doing what the book says with my lips and making a t sound as i blow, but nothing happens, all i can hear is air.

- do you think the problem is with how i`m blowing,

- or with the reed (which i had mail-ordered, it might be cracked)

- or with my old oboe?

Thanks.

I started playing oboe in December and couldn`t be any happier. I graduated from college some years ago and am working full-time and now I just want to to oboe stuff all day long: listening to music, practicing, making reeds, etc. You guys who are starting young are so lucky. I would give up everything I have to relive my life and start the oboe as a kid. But oh well. I am going to give it my all regardless. Hopefully some day I can play for one of the local orchestras or chamber groups. Weeeeeee!

To the new person who`s not getting any sound: did you soak your reed? It may be too hard. And you need to support your air flow otherwise you won`t get any sound. And make sure your embouchure is sealing the reed but without any trace of biting with the lips. Lastly, double check your fingering for the note you`re trying. My first note was a G. It was the easiest note to sound at first.

I`ve been playing oboe for almost 2 years now. I`m in 7th grade, and my director says I have a great oboe sound! Some of the best he`s seen in his entire career!! Yeah! I want to continue into college, and hopefully someday become a proffesional, so this is very good! Anyway though, my friends and boyfriend all hate the sound and still think it sounds like a dying duck! I guess the unloving just dont understand! I`m picking up alto sax for marching band, and all my friends keep saying " Oh, thank god you`re switching instruments" and I keep saying, I`m not , I`m just adding one! Then they get all POed!

Thanks for replying. I`m soaking the read for five minutes, but it gets real dry really quick. Its not a soft read, which beginners are supposed to get. The only one i could get was a medium reed. That`s probably the problem.

Tell me more of this "supported" - how do i support the air stream?
