Hi! I`ve been playing the oboe for 5 years now. My teacher Mrs. Massimo (She is a professional oboist and pianst) said that I jumped from begginner to intermediate in 1 year. I was very excited. I had two friends who played the oboe, but they both dropped out, now I`m the only one. That was in 4th and 5th grade. Now that I`m in 8th grade, I`m the only oboe in the band, and the band teachers never asks me to tune and ignores me a lot. He tells me that Jasmine (Baritone), Samantha (Percussion and bells), Jeremy (Flute) and I (oboe) have been chosen out of all the musicians in the schools in Waukegan, IL to play at city hall. I`m a great student and so are my friends, but why does he ignore me so much?

Maybe he just doesn`t like the Oboe sound or had a bad experience. He probably likes you as a musician.

Do you think maybe he knows that you`re proficient enough to look out for yourself (tune yourself etc.)? If not then i suggest you approach him, but be calm about it ya?

yea duo is right i tihnk he thinks that you can take care of yourself and that any problems you face, you can handle. i kinda feel the same way. i mean, whenever he tunes, he never asks me to tune my bassoon. i don`t know if he doesn`t know how or if he thinks i can do it myself, but to be honest, i have no idea if i`m not tuned correctly with the rest of the band. lol. when i started out on the bassoon (in september) i got heaps of help, which was much appreciated. then one day he noticed i already had pretty good tone and now he doesn`t care about my progress.. haha. i still suck at the basoon, i hope he realizes that.

anyways, i bet he just thinks that you know when to tune and that more attention should be put towards ppl who really need it.

oboe isnt a very commun band instrument so it`s the neglected band instrument....band teachers usually ignore you because they don`t really know anything about oboe

sadly the same goes for the bassoon. my band teacher *tries* to help, but he doesn`t really know what he`s talking about when it comes to the bassoon, so i just end up researching itto find it on my own =/

I know how you feel!! I am a freshman in highschool in symphonic band and I am stuck playing 1st part b/c the sophmore is sick. I wouldn`t mind but she has been gone for months now!! I always feel like i am alone and left out though!! Don`t feel bad I think we are forgotten b/c we aren`t that easy to find and people get so use to not seeing us that they forget!! I know that there are others and that we will never forget about each other!!Good luck with the oboe its really fun!!

hey, sounds as he likes you. maybe he just doesn`t know that the oboe is meant to tune:-)???
hey, i`m serious about it!
i would talk to him about it!
if he does not speak up, ask a oboe teacher how he thinks your playing is(maybe more).
....?

does he only do this to the oboes? b/c if he doesn`t then that`s cool if he makes fun of all of you...

if not, next time he makes you play with a broken reed, say:

number one: how in the hell can you play with a broken reed? do you expect me to play to my usual amazing capabilities if the only time you let me play is when you KNOW my reed is broken?

number two: why do you hate oboes? did an oboist prove to you how sucky YOUR playing style is by playing YOUR instrument even better than YOU can? or do you just like to pick on people because it makes you feel better about your otherwise crappy life?

number three: go f- yourself... HAHAHA... wow that`d get ya suspended, but it`d be so funny HAHAHA...

That always happens to me, my band teacher ignores me, but eventually it will end. You just have to do something to make your teacher notice you. For example, I won solo ensemble for..regionls I think it was...and now my band teacher actually recognizes that I exist.
