"wat can kill a person faster then a bullet... a sound of a oboe" after that... i just cracked it at him... and now he always pressures me and whines about how i play... everyone else thinks its fine... i need a new band director!!

My band director ignores me too... I`m 1st oboe, and for some unknown reason, the band director pays more attention to the 2nd oboe! It`s like... "Flutes, 1st Clarinet, Ashley..." What about Gene?! Urgh! I think it`s just because I`m multi-instrumental. My band director prolly dislikes me because I`m a better flautist and clarinetist than him!

double reed instruments (oboes, bassoon, english horns, and contra bassoons) stay in tune the best out off all instruments, that is why all instruments are tuned against the oboes clear A.Maybe that is why the teacher forgets you in tuning. lol. Also here is a tip I play oboe and my D`s G`s and A`s would not come out and a way to check is take off the top peice and put your finger over the bottom hole and cover the keys and put your lips on the top. Suck in air and pull your figner that is covering the bottom away, if you feel suction that is good, if not you have a leek and you need new pads and key adjustments.

Hee, having been the only oboe in my band for the past umpteen years, it`s easy to get ignored. Here`s a few things to remember:

1.) If you`ve got your part down well, there`s no need for the director to call on you to play. He stops the band to correct things.
2.) If you`re in tune most of the time, he won`t need you to tune. But, if you really need to tune sometimes (as I do), just ask. Don`t be afraid.
3.) Oboists are usually the best instrumentalists in the band, and darn near the smartest. I know for a fact that the past 3 valedictorians of my high school have been oboists. =D And for the past four years, there has been at least one Drum Major coming from the oboe section. Oboes ROCK. =D

So, don`t really worry if you get ignored by the director. If you need something, ask for it. If he doesn`t ask you to play a part, then chances are, you`re playing it right. If you aren`t, then the director`s incompetent and you need to ask him to hear you on the troubled part.

Errr, that`s all I`ve got. Hope I`ve helped!

Chris has the right idea. Don`t worry about it too much. If there was a problem with your playing, you`d know ;-)

Also, if you are worried about intonation, buy yourself a tuner. You can get a decent little chromatic one for about $20.00. After you`ve warmed up, play some tuning notes and check your pitch against the tuner (this is actually a good thing to do even when practicing... it`ll help you gauge which notes on your instrument need tweaking while playing). Your director will quickly catch on and be more likely to use you as the tuning note. Unless he`s a clarinetist ;-) Then he`ll get a tuning note from the 1st clarinet who`s almost always a good 15 cents sharp!

dont worry about it, for some reason the band directors always leave out the oboe players.its nothing against u.......or maybe its because ur always in tune??? and since ur story is impressive, ill tell u mine!

i`ve been playing oboe for about 4 years and i too jump levels quickly. right now im a freshman in high school (coppell high, in tx.) and i am the only freshman in honor band. (i dont tell a lot of people that because i hate being snotty and stuck up) but i figure i can tell yall because ur oboe players, and oboe players are probly the coolest people ever!!!!!lol.

thanks for listening!

hey guys. i read that one thred of your band teachers ignoring you. mine isn`t like that at all. he is really nice and he treats me well. i am a freshman and the only male oboe player at my high skool (9-12). and he is always helping me along and encourging me. i take privote lessons and that helps 2. but ne way there are two other oboe players. 1 is in 12th grade and the other is in 11th. well we talked in the begining of the year and he said he might move me up to sym. winds. that`s the bets band in the whole skool! it is made up of the upperclassmen. i was like ok. and i tought it was cool. so after our(freshmen) first concert, which i had a solo in the song "The Nutcracker Suite" he moved me up. so now next semester, i am in sym winds. i`m excited and kinda nervous! i am the only freshmen. and there is only 1 oboe in the sym winds band. she is better then the Senior which is way she is in Sym Winds. he said she switched from flute and that she is a good player. but i could overtaker her he said. i was happy. so next week i start in sym winds! he said he`d start me on 2nd oboe then we would have chair tests. hopefully i can overthrow this girl. i don`t wanna be mean..but i have wanted this since my first day in band. so wish me luck! best of luck to all you guys and girls as well! OBOE RULES! don`t let ne 1 tell you otherwise! bye and god bless!
