I play oboe ( hoping to learn bassoon so i can become a master double reed palyer) and this year my teacher put me in the pit in marching band, but i told my teacher that i really wanted to march, since this is MARCHING BAND! So i told him and he told me that the past oboe players he has had all played clarinet or sax so they played that. But another option he told me was playing the mellowphone. The mellowphone has a small mouth piece and you must keep your lips tight just like you would if you were playing a double reed instrument. Also another oboe player in the marching band plays it so she is going to give me tips!

I had to change to flute... it`s really not much of a difference, except for the REALLY high notes. I`m doing pretty well for a beginner flute; been keeping up w/ the sophomores, juniors, & seniors in my section lately.

yeah it sucks! I have played the oboe for almost five years and now I might not be able to because oboes are not for marching band. I didn`t sign up for marching band that is just what the freshman band is. my band director didn`t believe that they don`t make lyres for oboes.

Changing Instruments for Marching Band

I changed from Baritone Horn to Oboe about five years ago.
When asked to play Baritone for a season I was surprised to find that I had some chops (my embrouchure wasn`t too degraded) even though I hadn`t played in a few years. However, the better I got on the Baritone, the worst my Oboe playing was. Think, your Oboe embrouchure is firm on the sides, with the lips loosely supporting the reed to let it vibrate freely. To play Brass, your lips do the vibrating.
Well, my high school band director was an Oboist and he was put on the Tenor Sax on the theory that it was the closest and would do the least damage to his Oboe embrouchure.
You Canadians that would like to start marching. Are you sure you wouldn`t need to be riding snowmobils?

You dont have to play the bassoon while sitting down, some people prefer to sit down and use a seat strap but you can use a neck strap and stand and play.

Oboes aren`t usually played in marching bands anymore. However, the first types of marching bands (military bands) were mainly made of oboists. In fact, the band members were all called oboisten, regardless of what instrument they played, a custom which shows the importance of the oboe in early military music.
If you`d really like to play your oboe in marching band, then you could use that arguement against your teacher. If you have to switch instruments, a woodwind instrument would probably be less detrimental on your oboe skills.

When I was in marching band in HS, I learned to play tenor sax so I could march, since I was normally a concert bassoonist. But, our sister school Westfield from Houston TX had a show a few years ago which is pretty interesting, including spotlighting some very talented bassoonists.

Um, oboes don`t march because if they trip they can die. It`s happened. It`s not good.

I doubt anyone`s died from playing oboe in te marching band. The reed is too delicate to break skin without breaking itself. My brother hit the back of my head when I was playing once and I just ended up with a cut tongue.
I have to make the choice in two years on what to play in marching band. My brother wants to play the sousaphone so he could give me lessons. That would really mess up my embouchure. I have to play marimba or learn how to play a new instrument. Right now I`m leaning towards bass clarinet or soparno sax.
