Does anybody know about all the Bassoon solos? What are there difficulties, because they sound really fun to play?

I know of all the really popular ones. Their difficulties range from RCM 5 to RCM 10 (highest level). The popular 1st movement of the Mozart Bassoon Sonata K191 is Lvl 10.

Hello fellow bassoonists!

Wow it`s so nice that there`s more bassoonists on this forum... it used to be deserted.

Well anyways, I was wondering if anyone could give me some medium-level bassoon solos? I just play in a band and there`s not much attention on the bassoon as you all must know.

thanks!

I am just a secondary student from Hong Kong who play bassoon.......

In my opinion, I think bassoon solo pieces really hv a lot of choices. For example, for the first

piece of concerto, it must be Vivaldi concerto in E minor. Actually if you hvn`t play it in your life , you cant said that you are a "real bassoonist".

Second one must be Mozart bassoon concerto KV191. The piece is not so difficult in technique, but more difficult to the control of speed and the style of Mozart.

The Weber concerto and Hummel Concerto are the most difficult. I think Hummel is a little harder. It`s octive notes in the 1st mvt at the end is really crazy. And the range of notes are much wider than Weber`s in a short phrase of music.

However, Weber`s running notes are the most difficult in the piece. But I can overcome by the practice of staccato and "scale fingering".

Besides classical concertos, some other pieces are quiet good for solo bassoon. The sonatas written by Tansmann is a good chioice>>>>although Some of them are difficult XDD. The the Sonata of Telemann is suitable for the beginning of solo bassoonist.

Moreover, the Saint-Seans Sonata is a good choice ~Also I strongly recommend a french piece call Solo De Concert!!

Sorry for my poor English........

Hi i`m in the UK so i can suggest my favourite solos from the ABRSM exam syllabus:

Someone mentioned the saint-saen`s solo de concert- this is grades 6-8 and lovely to play. Although it`s high standard it doesn`t make you feel tired and knotted up if you know what i mean.

Elgar`s romance (grade8) is difficult to play `romantically` but it can sound lovely.

Pierne`s solo de concert (grade 8)is just amazing!!!! i love it!

Vivaldi concertos (5-8) are nice but beware, he doesn`t let you breathe anywhere!

There are loads more but these are my favourite!

Wilson Osborne`s Rhapsody is a beautiful piece, however it`s hard to play it well because of the note choice and odd jumps. If you can master it, it`s a great piece.

If you're looking for technical and lyrical pieces I suggest the Tansman Sonatine, the Malcolm Arnold Fantasy for Bassoon, and Van Slyck's Fantasia Numerica Sonata for solo bassoon.

I think that a good piece to play that is not so technically difficult, but is beautiful is Weissenborn's Romance. If you want to try something more technically difficult but not quite as difficult as something like Mozart or Weber, try Bordeau's Premier Solo.
