I think that they are both good in their own ways. Sometimes a composer needs one or the other. I would like to see "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" performed with an oboe, or Largo from the "New World" symphony performed with a bassoon (and that part was actually played by an english horn, not an oboe ).

Oh, bassoon definitely....... not that i'm biased or anything :p

No really, I do prefer the bassoon because I love the variety of tone and character. It's a fantastic instrument. I do like the oboe, i think it's beautiful when played properly, but I don't think it's as flexible as the bassoon. And, though both are torture to listen to when played by a beginner, I think the oboe is worse in that respect.

I actually like oboes too-think of the oboe part in the Entrance of the Queen of Sheba. I think that can only be played by oboes or maybe violins. However there are parts that a bassoon could play, like the oboe solo in Swan Lake

Of course there is. Everything sounds good on bassoon :p it's just that not as many people write for bassoon. Maybe because the bassoon is a bit harder to project than an oboe. I'd say maybe it's because the composer doesn't like bassoons, but if they like oboes then they MUST like bassoons!

Yeh. Ha, my flatmate plays violin, and practices 6 hours a day sometimes. Brilliant player, but hearing the same bar played 50 times would get to anyone. Especially when you're in bed, lol.
